If so how's it going i've had 11 since the begining of the month and they have all been took of my grandpa's lawn, have not had chance to take the traps down the farms yet probably get round to it next weekend. Also what traps do you think work best i have 2 top entry traps and 2 side entry traps, i get best results from the side entry but every one says top entry traps only work on magpies the side entrys are for crows. I've had a number of rooks and crows using a letterbox trap, on an old maize cover crop. A legal issue now. :unsure: Do Larsen traps have to exactly meet MAFF / DEFRA standards? On an estate nearby, a gardener made a larsen trap out of fence wire. These were extremely light weight, no springs, just a plate trigger- and a drop door. These traps were side entry. Catamong Posted March 24, 2003 Report Share Posted March 24, 2003 A few tips that I have learned about using the larsen trap: * Don't start trapping until about mid April - it is still too cold at night and the call bird will freeze to death. * Put your trap above ground level, ideally on a stable platform about 2 - 3 feet off the ground - then the birds will settle on top of the trap and are more likely to go in. Also the trap is less likely to be attacked by a fox. * Provide 2 perches for the call bird - it will hop happily between them and the movement is what attracts others. * Keep the call bird well fed on dog food, bread and whole eggs. * Don't get too attached to one particular call bird - keep rotating the bird with a new capture. * Reguarly check that the wire on the cage is not damaged. * Don't leave the trap in the same place for more than a couple of days. * Always wear a glove when extracting birds from the trap, as they will peck you...!!! F.A.C. holders are not allowed intemperate habits. My grandfather used to be invited on stage at the temperance rallies in the late 1800s to show what teetotalism could do for a man!! He never drank (alchohol) until he was over 50. He was born illegitimate in 1858 and left £29,000 when he died in 1939. The best advice I ever had from my dad was 'Don't start drinking until you're 21. By that time you'll have enough sense to know when you've had enough'. I got to 21 and thought 'Why start now'. Never tasted a drop till I was 26. Can't stand the taste of it, but if I have to go into a pub to find someone, I might have a cider shandy!
