Lloyd90
Say you shot a deer in the winter, butchered it and bagged it all up for the freezer. How long will the meat be good for ? Will it always be ok ? or should you not leave it go past a certain point ? So used to all these sell by and use by dates so was just wondering ? Also feel free to add your say with any other edible game, wildfowl ? pheasant ? pigeon ? rabbit ? Cheers guys Hopefully be getting in some stalking on Fallow this season, might need to get a chest freezer
Guest Stavvy
Last weekend I defrosted 2 pheasants that have been in the freezer since last October after we were given already dressed after a driven day. They smelled terrible and went straight into the bin.
VicW
Freezers usually have a notice on them with guidelines on how long different foods can be kept for. My suggestion is that six months is the maximum for anything. Vic.
jacksdad
I had a pheasant last week, been in the freezer since last year, was lovely, I once ate some Hollands steak puddings that I found at the bottom of my chest freezer (when skint, I empty it!) They were 2 years out of date, again, perfect If stuff is kept in a good deep chest freezer, I reckon it would last years, except fish and veg! I often have stews and casseroles that I made in bulk, several months after making, no problems.
Lord Geordie
If it's a deep freezer -18 ****10 to 12 month for pheasant and deer but that is just a guide it CAN last longer but it will og the meat. Apparently I have read you can freeze something for years and it's still safe to eat but will not be as nice as when you froze it. I read They found Mammoth steaks apparently that were fine to eat which had been frozen a few thousand years ago. When we were kids Mum n Dad had the freezer full of meat they used to buy whole animals at a time cut up into joints and steaks etc and freeze it down and it was in there 18 month normally we did OK with it
Darcshadow
dump it in a liquid helium freezer if you have one (2K (-271C)) it will last tens of years! hahah
allthegearandnoidea
A couple of years ago my parents were emptying their deep freeze and found a pheasant that had been there around 15 years. They ate it and had no problems
yankeedoodlepigeon
I have had fish and game out of mine almost 2 years on with no problem.
Sussexboy
They don't keep long at all, I put a brace of pheasant in the freezer last season and they were dead the next morning. Well...................somebody had to make the obvious joke. I've already got my coat.
Harnser
It depends on how soon something is frozen . If you are going to freeze something for later in the year it needs to be put in the freezer as soon as possible ,like on the same day it is killed if possible . Dont hang game before freezing . Harnser .
Lord Geordie
Dont hang game before freezing . Harnser . Well thats OK then! I shoot mine
vampire
Dont throw a load of rabbits in the freezer together until cooled or the middle ones will not freeze properly and be green when defrosted ,at least thats what the game dealer told me. Dr W
I always hang my pheasants for 3 days before cutting up and freezing for up to a year, never had any problems. Edited July 14, 2011 by Dr W
Grandalf
Agreed - three days hanging max for game. Then two years should be no problem with a good freezer. We have eaten geese after three and they were as good as ever.
