M.I.A
I have a pheasant that I hung for just under 24 hours, just breasted it and it smells. The guts appeared ruptured and has been in contact with the breast meat. The breast meat also smells abit. What should I do Thanks

M.I.A
Not green, just smells quite strongly especially where the cavity had been opened up near to the meat
BenBhoy
i think you'll be absolutely fine mate, i'd still eat it. so long as not gone green then the meat is fine. i plucked and dressed a cock bird yesterday been hanging in outhouse for 8 days. mpk
That will be fine my grandad would leave them till there were maggots in them (nearly) but with a gut shot bird I wouldn't roast it just use the breasts and legs
M.I.A
I've took the breasts off and they don't smell too pleasant, wuill it affect the taste much
Wesman
I only have 2 rules in life. 1) Never pick a fight with a man who has cauliflour ears and 2) Don't eat smelly meat. If it is green but smells ok, I'd eat it. If it smells, then no.
apache
Just throw it out.
mpk
If it smells really bad then maybe not, it may not harm you but probably won't taste that good
jacksdad
They do honk a bit even when freshly used! have you had them before? Last year I was given a brace that were already 2 weeks old when I got them, they STANK! Gutted and froze both, had one right away, the other about 9 months later: tasted much better than you would think
M.I.A
Yeah had it a good few time before but never had one smell. Its like a strong vinigary smell if that helps
Beardo
i always think Pheasant smells bad before it's cooked - that smell goes when you cook and they taste lovely.
yates
I think you'll be fine mate. As stated, i always find that pheasant always smells, even with newly shot birds. As for the colour, my ex-father in law didn't eat them until the meat tuned green after hanging for up to a month. He was fine, right up the point that he died from food poisoning
