Update on progress of lobbying MPs that support the Leagues EDM

As you may remember On 3rd July Michael Connarty MP tabled Early Day Motion 311 stating 'That this House supports the League Against Cruel Sports in its aim to end the suffering of game birds being shot for sport and other species being killed to preserve such birds, as shown in the League's recent documentary Gunsmoke and Mirrors; and calls on the Government to ensure that animals are protected from such senseless destruction.’

56 MP’s signed it

The MPs that BASC has spoken to have all said one of the reasons they signed EDM 311 was because they had received a number of letters from constituents asking them to do so.

It has therefore been very important for MPs to hear the other side of the argument and thanks to a number of BASC members, most MPs have now received letters from their constituents voicing their concerns.

As a result BASC now have meetings with seven of the MPs that signed the EDM, some with members as well. One such meeting took place in August and the MP, now properly briefed, is supportive of most aspects of game shooting and has asked to go and visit a local shoot which BASC will organise.

Two other MPs have met with BASC members at their constituency surgeries to discuss EDM 311 and learn more about shooting.

One Scottish MP, who knew nothing about shooting, took up a member’s offer of a visit around his syndicates shoot and is so impressed by what he saw that he has accepted other offers of going out on shoot days this season and is looking forward to the experience.

Despite everyone’s efforts, a number of MPs declined a meeting with BASC but a handful requested a written brief which BASC provided.

However, the big message here is that MP’s will react based on lobbying by their constituents- so please don’t be shy – get in touch with your MP!

Michael Connarty is my local MP and I will not post any comments I have regarding him as I would like to stay a member on this forum but lets say I never voted for him. Just to top it his ex labour companion in the ward next door is Eric Joyce (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2133369/Eric-Joyce-gives-astonishing-interview-MP-youll-read.html and astonishingly he is still an MP) so we have a great crop to choose from here.
