Hi,

We are looking for FROZEN STEEL SHOT WOOD PIGEONS. We pay .50p per pigeon and collect from all over the UK on a fortnightly basis with the exception of Scotland which is once a month. The pigeons must be shot using steel and then should have the wings and feet cut off before being frozen. The minimum we could collect is 50 at a time but we have no upper limit and we take them all year round.

Please feel free to give Guy or Dave a call on 01386 830089 to discuss or arrange a collection.

We will try to get back on here as much as possible to try and answer any questions but if we have not got back to you please just give us a call.

We also take rifle shot Rabbits and Hares we pay £1 each for Rabbits and £2.00 Hares.

We are also going to try taking Steel shot Mallard we will pay £1.00 each.

Question? If you use steel shot with plastic cups will that harm the gun?

I shoot nothing but steel as I keep hawks, supply a falcon breeder as well as Honeybrook on occasions.

I never use more than 1/2 choke and have never had a problem with steel.

A lot of people seem to think that steel going threw the barrels of a gun will damage them.

The steel is contained within a plastic cup that opens after it leaves the barrels, so the steel shot does not come into contact with the barrel.

I would suggest you drop down a size when using steel.

Hope this helps.

what about when using fibre wad ??

stevo

I dont use fibre wad ever cost to much. The farmers land that I shoot over are more than happy for me to just shoot the pigeons.

I get steel shot at just under £5.00 per box. so if you are on form you can more than pay for your shot.

Hi Honeybrook,

When you sell these on to falconers, will you be offering any "no lead shot" guarantees?

Can anyone recomend a good steel cartidge to use? I currently use Gamebore Clear Pigeon 32g no 6 but would be happy to try steel. My Fabarm is proof tested upto 1630 bar so should be fine with steel.

I use 28g No7 Steel. Great cartridge for pigeons.

Hi,

They are predominantly for our own use we are falconers and keep and fly our own birds. If we sell them obviously no one can guarantee 100% lead free as someone may have had a pop shot at one that is just out of range which a pellet has made contact with but not killed. What we do not want is people shooting with lead and then trying to pass them off as steel shot. A pigeon with a lead pellet in it when shot with steel is very rare. (From our experience)

Id suggest then, that it would be much safer to go out and shoot your own. I wouldn't dream of feeding my peregrines on woodpigeon shot by anyone else, just incase.

Hi,

We unfortunately do not have enough time in the day to go out and shoot pigeons. As with anything there is an element of trust involved but we build up a good relationship with our suppliers and get a good service while giving them a revenue from what sometimes is just a waste product.

beardo, I have used trap loads for pigeons for upwards of 12 yrs and for the past 6yrs 28 gram 7s in steel. They are in the right hands capable of killing pigeons out to 50 yds and as Ayrshiretaxidermy has said he shoots them as well. I have the pleasure of shooting with him(suck) and can vouch for his bags of pigeons. I have converted lots of local guns to trap loads and nobody shoots any less birds.

Cant see your kill to shot numbers being that good unless they are on the end of your barrels with No 7 steel shot.

I shoot nothing but steel, and Yes I have tried 7 in the past Myself and hawk4sport bought a good number and they just don't do the job.

We use No 5 steel

Yes, couldn't agree more, I wouldn't dream of using No 7 steel on the woodies in my part of the world, perhaps in bonny Scotland the air is that much thinner and the shot hits harder..?

I suspect it's more to do with the cost, a lot of guys on this forum use the cheapest load they can get, irrespective of whether it's the most suitable for the job..?

I've recently been using some 35g steel 4's, simply because my dealer couldn't supply me with my preferred 32g steel loads, and I kid you not, they did not perform as well as a 30g lead Gamebore Clear Pigeon load when it came to kills to carts ratio.

And I've been shooting pigeons since the early 70's, so I do have some idea where to point the gun... :innocent:

Cat.

104 for 6 boxes, will that do you? Steel 7s do the job no question, upto and over 40 yards.
