Just to let you know there will be a new clay shoot running in May to October every other Saturday 11-2 Addingham, west Yorkshire. It will be 50 bird sporting 5 or 6 stands. I have been shooting clays now for some years and have noticed the lack of GOOD shoots here up North. Well here is my contribution, the targets will be something for every1 with some tasty targets for you competition Shooters as well. All thrown from automatic promatic traps to include- Standards, Midis, Loopers and Rabbits. Currently in the process of getting it ready for our first shoot in May. Mr Potter Posted January 17, 2014 Report Share Posted January 17, 2014 Don't wish to be contentious MK3800 but as a Northern shooter I'm a bit surprised by your assertion there is a lack of GOOD shoots in the North. There is definitely a lack of shoots in general but I think your reverse advertising is just too strong. Who is the judge as to a good shoot, can't be you as that's hardly objective as you are now a shoot owner. One of my criteria for a good shoot is that it is on all the year round, is on a Sunday and is 100 birds, I expect a mixture of targets at any shoot ranging from the straightforward to the very tricky. Yours seems to be a a typical "strawbaler" and I don't mean that in a derogatory way, 50 bird sporting shoots are the very backbone of the sport. Don't make the mistake of confusing good with difficult, I have visited plenty of strawbalers were the average shot was down in the low 20s. They don't come back, it's very easy to make a shoot too hard (as it is to make it relatively easy) The true art is in creating a shoot where nearly everyone goes home with a smile on their face and that is very very difficult. It was the layout, variety and the picturesque setting that really got me feeling comfortable at the shoot and more importantly got me into the sport. All I was trying to get across is there aren't enough good shoots up north that put on competition targets with out having to travel 2 hours so this is my solution to it. No disrespect was meant to any other ground or shoot. I too agree with what you are getting at and totally agree with a good shoot being one where everybody goes away happy, I hope that people will do that after trying our shoot. Our aim is to have targets for everyone from your fun shooter to the more serious competition shooter, which is tough over a 50 bird course but am up for the challenge. With being a new shoot we appreciate any feedback good or bad. Thank you for taking the time to reply. Northern Gunner Posted January 20, 2014 Report Share Posted January 20, 2014 MK3800, Hope you are successful in your venture and I know from experience that 50 bird shoots can produce a good mix of targets for all levels of shooters but it does take time and effort to get it right and you will never please everyone. I run a shoot at Catterick and we have a strong following at our fortnightly shoots with a mixture of AA Shoots to complete novices and I always try and change my targets for every shoot so people don't know what challenge they will be facing on their next visit. We were shooting yesterday and had almost 100 entries so I think some clubs up North are doing their bit for the shooting community and I also know of a few others who would disagree about there been no good shoots up here. I concur there are some excellent shooting grounds oop north I regularly use Kelbrooke, they are very friendly and helpfull, we always leave happy though sometimes convinced the cartridges they have sold have been blanks...
