roost shooting

wear a face veil if you have one , choke would depend on how high the trees are , I would generally prefer half to quarter for roosting .

If the birds are high leave them and they will normally come round again lower.

Stand with you back to a tree , look for trees with plenty of dropping under them to show where the birds are favouring .

When shooting concentrate only on the bird , ignore the branches.

  • 2 weeks later...

had my 1st roost shoot of the year today, found a tree with a hugh amount of poo under it!!! had me gun choked 1/4 and 1/2 and was using 32g of 6s. when they ran out i had to use what ever was left in my cartridge bag .. . 28g of 7.5s!!! shot down just as many birds with the 28g as i did the 32g!! so basicly what im saying is this, what ever choke you got in ya gun then use it and what ever cartridge you got then use them as as long as the gun is in the right position the birds WIll drop!!

Hi guys thanks for advice, i settled for 1/2 choke and had 24 birds for 53 shots.

Well you did better than we did then.

Perfect conditions, perfect chokes and cartridges, perfect face-veils, perfect all round really but the pigeons didn't come!

Five of us in a thirteen acre wood which was teaming with birds last week.

We got six between us.
