Hard to answer totally as it would depend on the situation and conditions on the day.

Obviously if there is a flight line into the field you need to be under that if possible, ideally with wind at your back. So this may influence your decision because if to get this ideal set up you need to decoy into field in front then so be it.

Wherever you set up you need to get your deeks somewhere where they are easily seen, so again depending on the condition of maize or adjoining field this may influence your decision on where to set up.

Flapper or wurly? Down to personal preference really. If one is needed because deeks are not easily seen. But if they are in a good position under flight line with birds coming to the field you may not need either.

Be flexible as always ☺️ good hunting!

Try just decoys in the maze initially, if the birds have been feeding on it they will use it again.

If no joy then set the flapper and see the reaction.

If they still look to be passing or reluctant to coy and your happy with your pattern then try the magnet.

I would probably try the magnet on the outer forward edge of the pattern as a starter and watch the birds reaction from there .

What area of Essex are you shooting?

I would be interested to know what birds are about in Essex, not been out for some time.

Good luck.

I have found it virtually impossible to decoy birds onto maize using static pigeon decoys whether real or plastic. Use the rotary but look to placing some decoys in the adjacent field if the maize strip is not more than 40m wide, and in addition use one or more floaters when you get some dead birds.

Thanks for your knowledge and replies guys ,

Well got out early this morn after watching for a flight line over the wk end , there was roughly 150 birds there sat n Sunday .

But when I got there this morning , not one pigeon to be scene .

Gutted ,

Was it the change in the wind ?

I sat for an hour and watch the birds going on the rape field .

So I went on the rape and had one shot for one in two hrs .

Jacked in and went to work to save the holiday days for another day .

Bloody pigeons

Deny there's not a great amount of birds in the harwich area , but enough for a little bit of sport ,

Thanks again guys

If the pigeons wanted to be there, I would say the wind would have no bearing.

Is there actually food visible for them to eat? They may have polished off the remaining maize at the weekend and they have moved on.
