Where would people place the magnet and bouncers on a basic pattern like this? (copy&paste)

Firstly, the U/V would be the other way round given the wind direction, if IIIII is the hide.

im afraid all ive ever done is to chuck the shells out in a random pattern and the flapper 10-15 yds away from the group......i generally use a random pattern that i have seen most recently driving past fields that have feeding birds on them.......

...as penelope,pattern needs inverting and get the rotary at front of v/u and move bouncer out way to 1 side...apart from that perfect!...to be honest if wind is straight in face like that means pigeons final approach would be from behind to land so would also have decoys to 1 side not directly in front.

Yep, not too fussed on L's, V's U's or any other letter of the alphabet. As long as there is a hole in the pattern.

Given all of the above, I would also tend to put IIII (hide) offset to one side so it is not at the point of the V, probably doesn't make a jot of difference but I don't like the thought of them aiming directly for the hide as they come in from the back of the V.

Just chuck them around in a random pattern leaving an area for the birds to drop into and at a distance you can kill them at balanced with the choke/load you are using , remembering birds favour coming in to the wind (if there is one) I have checked many times and birds do not land in a comma, L, motorway, runway pattern........... However they often fly away!!

Far to much time is wasted on tinkering around with a slide rule on patterns....If you see a single pigeon feeding then it has dropped in with out the aid of a set up....its mates might join it as they have seen a feeding bird, but not due to the way they are positioned in the field....

^^^^ This, the birds will always want to land into the wind.

 

I too have found randomly thrown deeks work just as well, I use the patented 'double blob' pattern, and the magnet further out at the front of the 'runway'

JMHO

I do the opposite. I like the pigeons coming straight on at me. The only time I would move the pattern to either side is when I have restricted fire to one side. ie can't fire towards a road.

 

To the op, I like my magnet close to the hide - between 5 and 15 yards.

remember all birds like stuff that looks natural hence safe, spend some time watching real birds you will never see a neat geometric layout. Spent about two hours last week watching geese come in and feed on grass, always seem to learn something

Either left or right side forward of pattern, depending on which side the birds are tracking across field into the pattern. As Motty says, keep it close ish to the hide, some birds will be drawn right onto it and not into the kill zone. Don't put it where the birds are likely to pass over. Keep it unregimented!
