best time of day just now?

Hi, I am a total novice and have had only a few attempts at shooting on rape over decoys in the last few weeks.

I would be interested to know if there is a better time of day at this time of year? I've had very little success so far with very few birds coming in and only a few more going straight past despite the area being wick with pigeons earlier in the year. There are a lot of fields in the area and I am beginning to think they might just have too much to go at and any shots and they will go elsewhere and not feel the need to return? ???

I should add that I'm in the North East in the Tyne valley.

Any advice very welcome.

Watch them when ever you can and try and find their flight line. It could be roads, hedges, fences, tress but once you have established it set up on it.

Plus I have been to fields one day and see thousands and returned the next day and shot nout.

Enjoy!

They tend to top up in the afternoon , but this can be a very short session of intensive feeding . So you have to be on the field set up ready . The down side is that they can come in as a flock and you shoot two and spook the rest. If you are lucky they will come in as pairs and you bag up . Good luck.

That's exactly what happened yesterday... i was set up at 7am, thick fog till 11, couldn't see a bloody thing, finaly moved where the pigeons were, shot 2 in 2 minutes than nothing...

I like to shoot afternoons and evenings, I start on pigeons with a few decoys out, then move to cover a flight line as they filter back to roost and finally have a walk around the warren to catch a few unsuspecting rabbits out, I normally start about 1 ish, and finish just before dark, a perfect afternoon . I've tried early mornings with decoys, sure you get a few dropping in first thing, but it soon goes quiet and then there's that long wait for them to come around again, I'd rather have an extra hour or two in bed and a decent breakfast before going our.:yes:

I was out early yesterday - saw nothing for ages except the usual odd spooked bird as I set up. One bird flew over and I shot at it and the air was thick with birds from every tree and direction. This pattern was repeated for the next 3 hours - nowt in the air or coming to the decoys but whenever I fired a shot birds everywhere. They are definitely in the area but seem to be sitting in the trees and not feeding - just laughing at me in my hide :-)
