HotShot!
Got some growing that was sown last year. It is about 5 ft tall and in full flower! Does anyone know what it is like if you leave it for a second year. Thanks very much
ColinF
Read the answer to this question in the March newsletter from Kings: http://www.kingscrops.co.uk/index.php/kings-march-2014-e-newsletter I was interested as well, as we had some kale/rape hybrid that was looking good, but that's been flailed off now

Thanks very much Ours is 5-6 ft tall too, we're going to leave it come to head and as it starts to die broadcast stubble turnip to give us cover, I think the birds will find the seeds being shed interesting

Result! How tall?
TIDES EDGE
Blimey Paul that is where the fu** are we tribe country, I think you will find that it is to tall and thick at the moment for birds to get in ,foxes yes . We have also left some on our shoot no where near as tall and thick it has also gone to seed and dying back so the stubble turnip idea mentioned seems a good option
Paul223
There's a bit of weed around this plot so unfortunately it doesn't show how open the understory is, starting to roll over in places plus it was originally in strips with turnip, so it's rolling up and down, it'll be 2 months before the birds find it and by then were thinking it'll be just about right The amount of seed has to be seen, and it's still flowering here and there Agree with the foxes, Rob and myself had 5 out of it the other night! Rickyard shooter
looking real good I would put some rides in if it was me with tractor and topper when ready. so the birds would love that all mulched up. I use maize on all my strips and top rides out when in cob I start narrow and slowly make them wider as season goes on bird go mad when its all smashed up ad all seed is scattered about. I top about 2 days before every time we shoot so plenty to pick over.

Alycidon
Thought I'd give this an update, here's some pics of the crop, very heavy with seed and looks like it'll be shedding seed as the birds reach it......... Result! How tall? Has it has a lot of Nitrogen?, something has certainly made it go well. Would not like beating through that It will make a man of you !!. Worst stuff I ever beat was brambles at knee high all day. I got called in as a last minute beater to help a mate, first drive was wet kale, all the rest were open woodland with these brambles, talk about tired afterwards. TIDES EDGE
Hi Paul 223 what has happened to your monster cover crop?. The one we had went to seed then went flat but there is all sorts of things starting to grow and the kale still has seed in pods. I am thinking that if we mow it off in Feb/march the kale seeds should grow for next year and what is there now will do for this season. Paul223
Ours has gone to seed, we've cut a ride about 4ft wide down the length and the birds are loving it, I spent 3/4 hour this morning watching birds wander out of the wood and into the crop, couple of hundred birds, non of our crops have ever drawn birds like this! It currently has two feeders in it and soon will have an auto as well
Konnie
I have some utopia down the bottom of the farm that is in its second year, not looked for a while but had loads of seed pods if it self seeds think I will give it a bit of nitrogen, Do you think its holding lots of insects or the seed the birds are after ?
