When I was a young articled clerk, the firm that I was with wound up a company which had, among its assets, a 1959 1200 beetle, non-runner, no MOT.

The firm's partner could not be bothered with phoning up a scrappy to get rid of it, so offered it to the clerks for £1 - and I was the only one who stuck his hand up.

A morning's work got it going (new points, plugs and oil-change) and adjusting the steering got it through the MOT.

I ran it for a year with no problems at all, apart for the tendency to lose the rear-end in the wet - and sold it at the height of the beach-buggy craze for £120.

Our younger daughter had a purple 1971 1300 beetle when she was at school and university and loved it to bits - particularly as daddy was doing all the mechanicing and modifications.

That one ended up with Mk3 Escort seats and a recon engine and was great fun, until she grew out of it.

I quite enjoyed that one and was sorry to see it go

Mine is a 72' 1200 bug, resto cal look, full custom interior, banjo string steering wheel with sun & moon horn push, Flat4 retro roof rack, scat fast shifter, empi 8 alloys, bigger bore engine, disc brake conversion, adjustable front beam and swing arms, etc, etc.

It was supposed to be a fairly simple refurb and it went to be bare metal stripped on the back of a lorry and what was left pretty much came back in a carrier bag :(

At that point it became a 4 year project and quite frankly a thief of time and money, I never added up all the receipts because it would scare me to death. It is getting sold this year, i drove it for 1 year after doing all the work and then fell out of love. It turned out to be more about the project and much less about the finished car. Sad really.

I love the idea of a Type 2 splitty, but i know it would end the same way.

A few months ago I was given a 1982 scirocco, 1.5 litre, 63K on the clock, completely standard, owned by one couple from new. It's MOT'ed but does need some work (rear wheel arches are rusting, carb is gummed up), unfortunately due to buying a house it's been sat out back untouched and we may have to let it go off to better pastures :-(

Old VW campers are a big pain in my life.

They normally leak oil in my little carpark area or over my grass which kills it, then they have the nerve to breakdown in one of my fields so i either have to tow them or let the big AA transporter pick them up. I have more old VW campers leaving here on a transporter than all the other cars/vans put together, but i guess they are a lot older.

We have one family who come every year in their old VW bus, top speed about 50mph max, when they arrive after their 6 hour drive from hell all they do is complain about how long it took and how uncomfortable it was while their beloved old bus spews a puddle of oil outside my reception area. I now supply them with a sheet of cardboard to park over the top of so the oil does not kill my grass. 2 years running they had a quicker and more comfy journey home courtesy of the AA.
