Pigeons on winter wheat?

After keeping an eye on a recently mashed up game cover I thought I would give it ago yesterday afternoon. A quick recky with the binos and birds were about. A quick dash back home grabbed the kit jumped in me old landy and off. As I got close to the old maze from beyond the other side of the hedge around 200 plus birds lifted off. This field was winter wheat and around six inches tall!!! So where now? Maze or wheat, as the wind presented itself better for the wheat my mind was made. Got the hide set up, 12 fud decoys and wait. Not long first bird folded well into decoys and stone dead. He will do for the flapper I thought but numpty me had forgotten it although I did remember the battery. Anyway added this one as a floater to the back of the Patten and with a nice breeze yesterday worked a treat. Birds decoyed well ended on 35 picked for 58 shots. Just wondering why the old wheat and not really bothered about the maze??
