steel shot

If steel pellets come into contact with steel proof barrels they will score them. Its about pressure in the chamber and a tighter choke on steel pellets that will not compress like lead, this latter point raises barrel pressure. Don't choke lead tighter than modified all you do is get silly tight patterns at long range that lack the energy, I can out pattern the energy of 36 grm no 3 Gamebore mammoth with a Kicks in modified and these aint bad shells

the choke issues are, steel shot can open a choke quite easily that was the problem in the older days. chokes that were tight were usually crimped, a few shots of steel shot and they start to be permenately shot open. that was the problem with fixed choke old guns.

the british gun trade say no more than 1/4 with steel. the cip proof body say no more than 1/2 with large steel shot.

i personally would use 1/4 with all steel shot, i would use 1/2 with smaller shot (thats 2s max (that is just my personal opinion)).

this is standard chokes, not those aftermarket ones which are hardened, exclusively for steel shot / big steel.

the hp cip criteria, is for shells and barrels for upto 1050bar, but most shell manufacturers wont go that high,

the manufacturers of steel shells state cip and what gun standard the shells can be used in.

normal steel shells, wouldnt even bat an eyelid at 32g loads upto 2 with 1500fps 1/4 choke.

homeloads, i`d use 24-42g loads of big shot, 1400fps min should take care of anything 1/4 choke.
