Oats

It's one of those crops that could be productive when other choices are limited for the pigeons. It's possible to shoot good bags on unlikely fields, though. I have shot over 100 on bare fields and also fully grown unharvested beet.

Only ever seen pigeons feeding in an oat feild once in about '75 and then they were feeding on chickweed and clover which was growing on the margin.

Have tried it several times when there were birds around but its always been a waste of time. A good freind of mine and Farmer from the borders used to grow nothing but Oats and he never had it touched by Pigeons. He did use to have a lot of Blackies pulling up the sprouting grain though.

Give it a try though...its better than being sat indoors or painting the fence..

We have two fields of oats drilled out back, they only got on it for two days after drilling and then not in great numbers. I think even then they were investigating the other opportunities that might have been offered by drilling rather than feeding hard on the oats.

I have heard that oats, in general, is a waste of time.

Got up nice and early and set up pigeon and crow decoys.

Only had a couple of hours before spending the day with the family, but ended up with 6 pigeon and 19 mixed corvids!

Good bit of sport for a couple of hours and better than wasting the morning in bed!

Cheers chaps
