Possibly the last of the barley drillings.

Unlike our Lord and Master PC I have not been 'the dutiful husband' today. Instead I went shooting for a change.

I took a friend out who was bursting at the seams to have a few shots but who was too impatient from the off and as soon as he spotted two pigeons on the same line he wanted to set up.

The weather man said that we had until four this afternoon before the heavy showers so I took my time. There never was any line into the old drillings but every time I glassed the two fields there seemed to be birds on. A footpath was a complication but despite the fact that it was Easter Monday only one person walked along it so we had the fields to ourselves.

We started with four dead birds on spikes and my friend insisted on using his rotary. Of late I have not used any mechanical gadget on drillings so I insisted that he carried it himself. We shared a hide. There was a gentle flow into the decoys for two hours or so and we ended up with 35 pigeons and one carrion crow. We took it in turns to shoot and as luck would have it my companion shot three very nice doubles but I did not have one chance of two birds at once.

As I drove back I was caught in a tremendous hail storm and the road was white over.

Do you think the rotary give the birds more confidence JDog? I only ask as i used mine yesterday but couldn't honestly say if there was any benefit or not on Drillings.

I am not sure at all. Perhaps I need another 1,000 days decoying before I can make an informed decision. Recent outings without the rotary have shown birds decoying well.

Well done , as much as I like my magnet I feel there is little need of it on drillings , most of my shooting involves a bit of a walk so its just something else to carry .

Thanks guys pretty much my own findings too at the minute.

Glad you had a nice afternoon and got back in the car before the heavens opened :good:

good bag :good:

I haven,t used the rotary this time around on drillings I have used it on drillings loads of times but like you say the weight factor of machine and battery and distance to shooting spot stopped me using it and used a turbo flapper instead found that to work very well and no birds flaring from it

We used the magnet on Friday and not on Saturday and the results differ greatly. The debate will continue about the use of the Magnet on drillings but until you can have the same day over exactly with and without the magnet we will never know.

I'm glad that JDog managed to get out and shoot today as he was forced to use a magnet and it must have improved his chances but he hated every shot because he knew it was all wrong.

At the end of the day we all enjoy our sport and luckily JDog managed to get back in the car before the retribution was delivered for shooting on a Bank Holiday

The only time i will try the magnet on drilling is if i am way off the flight line and the birds are not seeing my decoys, otherwise i just use the turbo flapper on a button to get their attention and hopefully come in to the pattern.
