Optima HP - Genuine Vs After Market

Following another thread I just read regards Teague chokes and not wanting to hijack the thread.......

Has anyone patterned original Beretta (gun is Beretta Xtreme) Optima HP chokes against after market chokes? I don't know much about chokes, I have read about Teague, but I know there are many out there to choose from.

The gun only comes with CYL, MOD and FULL, so missing 1/4 and 3/4 in old money, possibly contemplating getting a 1/4 choke for the hide but not sure whether to look at original or after market.

Patterning chokes does depend on the cartridge so if you used brand X and someone uses brand Y the results could be very different.

You also have to bear in mind that choke constriction is measured by percentage of shot in a circle at a set distance. This is then the problem, most aftermarket choke and gun manufacturers have differing ideas on this and most aftermarket chokes tend to be of a tighter constriction than standard chokes that come with the gun.

Is is not a problem using a set of chokes from the same company but buying a 1/4 choke from one manufacturer to sit in the middle pattern wise of two chokes from Beretta is probably not going to give the results you were hoping for.

To highlight my point I bought a set of Briley chokes for my Browning, the 1/4 choke was akin constriction wise to a 3/8 Browning choke and I actually preferred it but the 1/4 designation was completely arbitrary between the two manufacturers and quite meaningless.

So if you want to be sure your 1/4 is a 1/4 in relation to your other chokes then stick with Beretta, if not then you cannot go wrong with Teauge or Briley.

I have a set of Teauge 3/8 chokes in my DT10 which is just normal optima and cannot fault them, but to be honest I could not fault the standard chokes either.

I've been shooting a Prevail with extended HPs at clays for over 2 years and the only reason I'd have to buy aftermarket chokes would be cost. I've got no concerns at all about their performance, they don't get loose while shooting and both barrels shoot to the same place. I did pattern my ½ chokes once and they were pretty good; slightly hot cored but with very few flyers.

I've had Teague chokes, flush and extended, in all my previous clay guns and whilst they're beautifully made chokes and pattern well they've all loosened up whilst shooting.

I have just bought a genuine beretta 3/4 extended choke for my A400 . And have to say I love it . Cost me £55.00 from avalon guns . Just put it in and tighten with choke key . Never came lose all day . Great bit of kit . And looks the part too . Also throws an excellent pattern too .

just found this topic while googling (should have known PW would have the answers i wanted!) like Cosd i only got three chokes.. bloody tight of betretta when you get an escort for a fifth of the price with five chokes

i put a half choke in and left it there since i bought the gun but again like Cosd im thinking of opening things up a bit for use in the hide so am thinking of a 1/4 which avalon have or more likely a 3/8 which avalon dont have so it looks like an aftermarket and teague have what i want so im stuck.. do got for a 1/4 or a 3/8? any one used both and have an opinion?

Purchased a Gemini HP 1/4 choke for my A400 Xplor Light, Tried it for the first time last Saturday Roost Shooting and noticed how far out and hard it seemed to be hitting the pigeons.

I patterned the choke Sunday morning and noticed that the pattern was very tight using the Eley High Flyer 32gram No 5.

My brother makes quite a few trips a year so I always shop there and have stuff sent to his house to bring home.. Bargain then. I bought a briley bolt handle and button and saved a fortune compared to the uk price

Yes, the item prices are good, it's the import duty and delivery that puts the prices up!

If I was you I would go for a Gemini choke, they are very well made and you will be pleasantly surprised!

In my 692 the standard chokes do seem to pattern tighter than the earlier optima chokes.

Not tried it on a patterning board just a gut feeling.

In my optima choked auto I always used modified and yet in the 692 I find quarter choke gives the same quality of kills.

Saying that I am now using Muller chokes and am very happy with their performance.
