Cost of shotgun shooting lessons

Recommended Posts

£75per hour !

I nearly spat my my brew across the room!

How is anyone meant to afford shooting lessons at £75 per hour for tuition with the cost of clays and cartridges on top of that it's going to be £100per hour by the time you have finished.

Horse riding is only £45per hour and there feeding the horse all week and covering vets bills.

I don't earn masses (16k) with a mortgage & car etc it means a lesson at that rate every other month at most, now how the heck am I meant to learn with that sort of time frame between lessons ?

Crazy ! I bet you're learn more spending the money on cartridges and clays and keep blasting away untill you find them and learn like that !

could not agree more matt

I had a few lessons many years ago and at the time they were obviously a lot cheaper but still relative to earnings at the time.

after many years of rifle shooting my shotgunning is now a long way from where it was and as I have started pigeon decoying thought I should get my basics right again but I just cannot justify it

think how many cartridges you can buy for the price of 2 or 3 lessons.

To be fair, once you've learned the basics, it is just a matter of practice to get you up to a certain standard.

As long as you know what you're meant to be doing, where you're going wrong, and how to correct it then you can quite easily reach a decent level.

The thing is, of course, do you know what you're doing, where you're going wrong and how to correct it?

Whichever way you cut it, it's excessive. I'm not aware of any other sport which has tuition that is as expensive on an hourly basis. If they're busy then that's potentially a pretty constant £75/hr.

I know how to charge as a gas engineer, but I'll guarantee my overheads are higher and, although I charge £45/hr jobbing, I never earn 8 hours straight at that. You lose half the day traveling and if it's a full days work the rate drops dramatically anyway to about half that.

That's why lots of coaches shoot with other coaches helping each other get better! Easier to diagnosis someone else's faults than see your own.

The £121 per hour lessons isnt necessarily twice as good as the £60 or 4 times better than the £30 one.......

Depends what you are being coached in really. If you are just looking at shooting live quarry and the odd straw baler then its probably not worth it, just learn from your peers.

If you want to shoot competitively then its an entirely different thing. If your coach is qualified & a proven shot with achievements and titles held to back their experience up, then that isn't really that expensive altho £50p/h is more the norm.

Luckily I shoot every weekend with 2 people on my regular squad who are ISSF qualified coaches and I also know quite a few more accomplished coaches to boot.

I coach or have coached for 2 out of those 3, you can get the same coaching here. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/278760-discounted-shooting-lessons/

But not the nice club house.

I also think it's very excessive, but you do find a number of coaches who are willing to coach at a reduced rate, and sometimes for nothing.

I am a level 2 cricket coach and when I was coaching I would charge £40 per hour and that included the cost of renting the net (£20).

Doesn't seem to give youngsters much of an opportunity to get into the sport, and develop when you think they would have to fork out £100 a lesson

Bisley, 3/5p corkage charge on your own carts, surly thats a joke.

I have always fancyed a lession or two but not that those prices, £25 is more like it. As a level 2 paddlesports coach i charge £20 per hour so i can live with £25 ph.

Pratice makes perfect but a good starting point helps.

  • 4 months later...

John Bidwell's club in Suffolk does have a go sessions £30pp where you are grouped together with others learners - you get (I recall - check as it may not be quite so now) 25 clays with instruction. My daughter had a few sessions like this and then had a few clays with me. She became quite a good shot. This was quite a good way to learn, with others present it took some of the pressure that one to one sessions can have. If anyone lives nearby and has interest check first (High Lodge, Hinton, Suffolk) as it is a while since I've been there.

All the premium grounds down south end up @ £100 per hour+.CLearly larger grounds have staff/receptionists/buildings/insurance/coaches salaries to pay so I can see why it has crept up.West London/Holland&holland/bisley/RBSS are chasing the top end money. In terms of the future of the sport at grass roots it is pretty worrying........but hey when sold a business paid £600 per hour to a London Lawyer.............and a few months of his time could now have a pair of purdeys........

I cheat, one of my local grounds is run by a good shooting coach, turn up when it's a bit quiet and he can't help but wander round and help you out. A singular round of 50 took me 3 hours once, he was offering that much help and advice I think my £12 of shooting was worth 20x more!

On the flip side, was having a bad few months, couldn't seem to hit much so went for a lesson with a different instructor. £75 later he told me I had good form, and he couldn't recommend anything. Next time out I hit nothing.
