tx4cabbie Posted June 4, 2014 Report Share Posted June 4, 2014 Our cocker went off her food and vomited a couple of times last week, gave her a day off food, but whilst she stopped being sick she kept refusing food. Then she ate a decent meal of chicken Saturday, but was sick a few hours later. Took her to emergency vet that afternoon, he gave her an anti nausea injection and some pills, she still seemed down and wouldnt eat. Took her to usual vet, pal of mine from school, he gave her some more injections, antifever, antibiotic, antacid, said it could be gastritis or Pancreatitis, not to worry, she'd be fine. Since then she has been more lively, playing in the garden, chasing tennis balls, drinking, not being sick, eating a few small pieces of Beef Monday and Tuesday, literally a handful of small pieces, but today, only three or four tiny bits of boiled chicken. Offered her wet dogfood, dry dogfood, boiled chicken, boiled rice, Beef, Beef with gravy, scrambled egg, but she turns away. Vet took Blood sample yesterday, results should be back tomorrow, she seems to be either running around garden or sleeping, I don't know what's going on. Usually she's a belly on legs, and I have let her get too heavy, too much munch and not enough exercise (me too), but wife and I are really worried - anyone had similar experience? Been told she may be avoiding rich food as it would upset her guts, so have put boiled rice/chicken out for her, but no go. Any ideas what will make a sickly cocker regain her mojo/appetite? I'd just be doing what your vet has said to do, and keep her comfortable, don't go doing things with an ill dog from advice online, she's being looked after by a pro. ditchman Posted June 4, 2014 Report Share Posted June 4, 2014 Sometimes dogs more often and not spaniels,,,have to go and eat something really rank like a dead something that is crawling with maggots ..etc...this used to happen to mine...and they are sickly for a day or two...aparently it doesnt do them a lot of harm...it builds their gut flora up what i always resort to is feeding them small meals of nothing else except Chappie...if the dog is drinking thats good.............im not saying that is your problem its what happens here ..... Her Tummy is rumbling, and she seems interested in food when offered, but sniffs then turns away. Will bell vet again, he's a good lad, and I just gave him a Becker bk11 neck knife that I handled in stabilized oak as he keeps ruining his bear grylls knife- hopefully the revelation of convexed carbon steel over Gerber supersoft stainless will make him well disposed to fixing my dog. Some blockages don't come up mate. Is she Tom Titting OK? Sometimes blockages just cause a narrowing allowing small amounts to pass into the gut, some block and let nothing through, in both cases the food has to exit somewhere..if it cant exit the rear it comes back up. I found out that i had taken her into a field that had just been sprayed with weed killer. Gutted but she's ok now. Hope your dog gets well soon. Bloods came back from vet, says she has a Minor liver inflammation/infection, has given us antibiotics and antinausea pills, lots of fun shoving those down her throat twice a day - not so bad when she is eating as can wrap in ham but with her not eating at all the fight she puts Up is out of all proportion to her size! Still running about after tennis balls, and she had a nose about in her bowl at some grilled chicken, but I don't think she ate any. Be honest with you, if she was mine I'd be cutting out on letting her expend energy, chasing balls etc. If she's low on reserves, and she will be, would have thought as little exercise as possible would be the way to go. gsorense Posted June 30, 2014 Report Share Posted June 30, 2014 You probably have this sorted now (I hope), but my little Border terrier bitch went off her food with similar symptoms etc and didnt recover for almost 2 weeks around Christmas. My other half is a vet and diagnosed it as a severe gastroenteritis (gut infection). It was tough to see her in such a bad way but it is amazing that a 7.5kg dog can not eat for 2 weeks and be ok when the antibiotics eventually did their job. dogz25 Posted July 6, 2014 Report Share Posted July 6, 2014 Hi mine is the same at the moment not been sick tho. Vet said slightly high temp a couple of injections and a weeks worth of pills. They finished on fri. My dog still only eats a very little bit. My dog is a springer normaly eats anything. Did you find out what was wrong with yor cocker. She had a good look at my bitch and said she is having false pregnancy. Milky teats and what ever else she said in vet terms. Anyway she said starve her from 8pm and bring her back in the morning for bloods. So I did and they tested in house and all was clear. I was given some Galostop to dry her milk up. She asked if I was going to breed with her if not to have her spade to stop it happening again. If I bred from her would that stop it happening again.
