JABB
Looking at a comfortable barge to get the kids around and get me to my permission. Real off road not required. What is the consensus of early ( 2003 - 2004 ) XC90s and Touaregs?
Mungler
Both are now looking a bit dated now. I think the XC90 is supposed to be the better albeit pricey for what is still a Volvo
Mike737
Freelander? I had a 2004 Td4, cracking car, better than I would have ever thought in the snow, and when an artic sideswiped me on the M1, it survived extremely well, and SWMBO and I came out of it without a scratch! Mungler
ME's just got himself a tidy Freelander with all the toys. A very relaxed and nice armchair ride - worth a look.
Kes
There are better choices than either model - it would perhaps pay you to think about consumption, resale value etc to refine the choice - none of those mentioned would be my first choice. dodeer
VW are great off road, locking diff sand all that. Volvo is just AWD but seems to cope ok. Driven both and my money would be on the VW in 3.0 diesel. Volvo can be bought cheaper though and been a passenger on one in Spain a fair bit. keg
Touareg every time. Volvo is thirsty, servicing expensive if at main dealer. Other option might be a Landcruiser?
Tedly47
Had a xc90 for five years and had to replace the gearbox twice..... First time dealer paid for it second time I had to at the cost of 4k, put me off Volvo's for life even though it was a great family bus, currently drive a ........... JABB
Was that the T6 box? I have heard they are a nightmare and to avoid at all costs
Cosd
Toureg gall day long! Much better off road and for me a better looking car, plus it's German! Toureg all day long! Tedly47
Yes bought it when it was a year old, had all the toys and was a great family barge until it broke...... Heard of problems with the older diesel gearboxes as well, it wasn't the car that put me off it was the dealer that let them down (had to threaten them with court action) put me off for life.. JABB
Throwing in another ball, how would they compare to a later ( new shape ) Grand Vitara?
Kalahari
Would have thought the five door new shape Vitara worth a look. Low ratio and diff lock on the diesel and bigger petrol engine. Suzukis got a very good reliability record. David.
Tedly47
I also looked at this, checked some motoring forum's on it and I was put off, too many problems which were very expensive to fix.
NickS
I run a 2009 Touareg 3.0 V6 Altitude. They are comfortable, spacious, powerful and well-equipped. Downsides are the standard tyres (useless off-road or in snow) with it eats if you are heavy-footed, the prop-shaft that lasts about 50K miles and swirl flaps which cost a fortune (£800) if VW do them or £10 if you buy a repair kit, plus fitting. I am going to be changing mine sometime soonish and would be happy to sell privately for whatever I am offered in PX. Nick
JABB
Still looking, and maybe upping the outlay. What is the opinion on the Freelander 2?

Cambsman
If you don't need offroad capability then buy a standard estate car. Loads to choose from a nd all lots cheaper than "designer" pseudo off roaders. If you need a touch of offroad then take a shufty at a Subaru. Fab cars, great engines and utterly reliable. Check how many farmers drive them and that will tell you all you need to know.
