How long is too long.........no pun intended !

Hi guys, I have always got stuck into the plucking and gutting lark as soon as I get home from shooting. Some of the birds will have been dead for a good many hours before I deal with them.

Question is this: How long is too long before preparing your Pigeons to eat? Can they be left overnight and seen to in the morning? or will they go manky in that time?

I have read (on PW) that its good to empty the crops if they have been feeding on certain things or else the meat will taint.

Any advice welcomed

Thanks

It completely depends on the conditions they are kept. You should cool the birds as soon as possible, try not to keep them in a bag, keep them separate so that the body heat dissipates. If you hang them in a cool shed, next day or even longer is fine. This time of the year though, I would like to get them prepared as soon as I can but would leave them overnight if pushed for time.
