Danoi99 Posted June 29, 2014 Report Share Posted June 29, 2014 Hi guys, I have always got stuck into the plucking and gutting lark as soon as I get home from shooting. Some of the birds will have been dead for a good many hours before I deal with them. Question is this: How long is too long before preparing your Pigeons to eat? Can they be left overnight and seen to in the morning? or will they go manky in that time? I have read (on PW) that its good to empty the crops if they have been feeding on certain things or else the meat will taint. You should cool the birds as soon as possible, try not to keep them in a bag, keep them separate so that the body heat dissipates. If you hang them in a cool shed, next day or even longer is fine. They were left on a cool tiled floor for a few hours, then bagged and put in the spare fridge (Mrs doesn't know about that bit yet).
