Is it possible. A 12volt or Electric pump to refill PCP Air rifles

There is a Shoebox Compressor, but afaik it only runs on 110 - 120 Vac ( i.e., it's made for the USA market).

I doubt very much that you'll ever find a 12 volt version capable of supplying 3000/4000 psi.

I would like to see a small inexpensive air pump that is electric or could run off a 12volt car battery that could refill a PCP air rifle.

It's an idea that could change how we charge in the future.

However is it possible?

You would think that if a pressure can be reached using a hand pump, there should be a conversion to electric power.

I imagine it can be done in theory, possibly by using a series of stages and gearing but it would take an age to do and flatten more batteries than you could carry.

Because you can't get something from nothing, or at least lots from very little. Using a hand pump takes energy to apply a force (most of that energy comes from the planet via its gravitational pull on your mass) and a 12 v battery will only hold a limited amount of energy and therefore exert a limited amount of force.

You could do some long winded calculations into the total energy in a battery verses the energy needed to compress air but it gets complex and depends on the different pressure, temperature and volume changes in different gasses, efficiency of energy transfer etc etc but at a quick glance there just isn't enough oomph in a bar battery to do it - even if it could work it would be incredibly expensive to build a single purpose compressor for a relatively small market.

Ok so physics possibly rules out a 12v battery but I have a compressor the inflates my tyres which plugs into the cigar lighter in the car. 30 years ago these didn't exists now there £20 out of Halfords. So I still think there is a chance it could work.

But the small compressor for car tyres only has to produce about 30 PSI and are normally limited to only short use.

As TIGHTCHOKE said they operate at much lower pressures, and there are many more cars in the country than PCP air rifles!

Ok it seems like it's a crazy idea then! But there is some legs in the 240v version.

Also there is a market for divers scuba bottles not just PCP rifles.

They said we couldn't fly but the Wright brothers proved them wrong. The we broke the sound barrier. Then we went to space. The world never accomplished anything saying we can't. It took mad ideas and pioneers to prove it could be done.
