they are a great piece of kit for the right place in the right situation,

brilliant around the farm what with buildings and the likes, the ammunition is a lot cheaper also if ya counting pennies as some do

On small areas, around buildings I favour the FAC air.

On more open areas but where you want to be as quiet as possible ie near animals I favour the .22 Rimfire

On open farmland away from anything I favour the .17 HMR for its range & power

Use & buy the right tool for your situation and you cant go wrong. I went through a spell of not using my Air rifle but then got asked to control rabbits at a couple of schools and a small paddock where the Rimmy was just a non-starter. So glad I didnt get rid!

When I got my FAC air it was on a closed ticket so land needed to be approved but after you have been shooting a while and can prove competence/safety you can ask for an open ticket. My force asked for a letter from someone who could verify this (shooting buddy)

certainly agree, but you cant feed it as cheaply as fac air :whistling:

depends if feeding includes bottle, refills and new seals etc. its what £30 cheaper per 500 rounds? Not much per shot when you consider stuff the RF never needs and hardly ever needs.

I don't think the niche is really around buildings as you can do that with 12 ft lb just as well or better. For me it was shooting pest birds at roost and limiting the danger of ricochets when the ground was hard, in reality it cannot replicate a .22 lr at the other open field stuff. I sold mine at a good price to a close friend on the proviso that it remained on my ticket and I could henceforth borrow it if I needed it for a particular task, its still on my new ticket and it must be 2 yrs now and I haven't needed it once.

He is still on closed terms and will be for 5 yrs as is the norm in Lancs, I am told they don't even open up FAC shotguns from the get go. I have been told that some other areas will give opens on FAC air and others will grant FAC air but not RF to some applicants but that's just the mess that licencing is. My mate often likes to take it out for LR tasks and his brother was so impressed he put one on his ticket this time. They both shoot a lot of squirrels and the like from trees and live a lot closer to houses etc.

Im in the market for FAC Air and when my ticket came back from variation my slot was opened from the start.

I got a rim and it gets it fair share of use, but iv always wanted an FAC Airgun as when im out with my sub 12 rifle, i'm always looking for the extra power to take those more shy wary and hard to stalk rabbits an squizzers etc.

It will defo have its place in my cabinet and earn its keep.

I've not used fac air but for me it would replace sub 12 air rather than .22lr or .17hmr. From what I've read .22 at 30ft/lbs will take you to 55-60 yards rather than 35-40. I'm sure lots take it further.. I'm just repeating what I've read. This would make it much more useful and as has been said safer shooting up into trees.

Hand on heart, mine was a 30 ft lb rapid. Max range at which it would do the groups I expect to need for clean killing 65 yards, my mate now owns it and has spent a packet on it with a top bloke, might just squeeze another ten out of it on those groups.

Here is the rub though, we don't shoot stuff with groups its one shot and getting a good placement you need near perfect conditions. Rather than define the conditions and get into debate I shall equate it to a first round hit with .22lr and subs at double the range not exact but very near to equivalent taking in all factors.

The air pellet will always be more effected by external factors and still is only generating 1/3 of the energy, so placement needs to be better.

None the less useful in the right circumstances Like up the trees, if only we could get seriously good 30 ft lb .22 LR its fate would be sealed

I have my FAC Air and it is now my only FAC rilfe, I got rid of my HMR and .22lr.

The .22lr only stayed with me a matter of weeks and I didnt like it because of ricochett concerns. Also my biggest permition wouldnt allow .22lr.

I use sub 12ftlb and FAC Air, if I wanted another powder burner for long range bunnys I would be looking at HMR again or if land allowed I would go .22 Hornet.

For me and my land/requirements my FAC Air is ideal and .22lr cant offer anything else that I dont already have. I put pleanty of bunnys in the bag with mine and shoot to 70 yards, anything over 70yards I would use HMR over a .22lr anyway.

I use a Ranger fac 40lb its awesome on rabbits. Off a pod its a real rabbit killer and once you get used the the holdover can take rabbits out for fun at big distances.

Mine is zeroed at 60 yards with about 1 inch high mid point so dam flat shooting using 18g pellets.

There are a few lads on here that have seen it in action and all where gob smacked. Mark (Bullet Boy) Steve B Wales. Mark (The Poacher) Darren (Larro)

Would not be without it now, only drawback blinking heavy ,but as i said i only shoot it off the pod. atb Terry

Yes as Terry has said fantastic gun. My one and only permission is FAC air passed so I presume that is the route I will have to follow because I am in need of extra distance. Darran.

Go for it you won't be disappointed! Love mine and puts miles more in the bag than my sub 12.

Every calibre and every power and ammo has a use, but some people simply don't have much requirement for some calibres/powers.

I have 12 ft lb and FAC as well as loads of rimfires and centrefires and shotguns, they all get used, but there are sometimes gaps between the right jobs for some calibres.

The FAC air gets used least of all mine these days, but when I need it, I need it!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a slot on my licence for FAC air and haven't bought one yet, but I have .17HMR and .223 now, so it's a bit like the case of why eat burgers when you've got steak. I've got lots of land, and the .17HMR effectively deals with vermin at up to 150 yards, so when you don't need to be quiet or worried about lack of backstops, there just doesn't seem any need for FAC air.

Originally I got it for shooting around horses, but the horses are no longer on my permission, so you can be as loud and proud as you want now. Plus I have my sub 12ft/Ib S410, which is perfectly sufficient for around buildings. Give it a few months and I'll apply for a one-for-one variation from FAC air to .22LR, on which to specifically mount a night-vision scope.
