Absolutely original condition inside and out, garaged for about 35 years. We want to sell it. I ran the registration through a valuation site and it has been given an estimated value of £4000 (the registration number, that is). I know these valuations are highly speculative but supposing it could fetch that much would it be worth selling the plate separately and buying a cheaper age-related plate to sell the vehicle with or would the van be seriously devalued by not having its original registration? Offers and valuations for the van have ranged from £2000 to £8000. So I'm not quite sure what to do. A couple of people have said leave the original plate with the vehicle but they were half interested in buying it themselves - though they didn't have enough money - so they would say that wouldn't they. I'm trying to get mother as much money for it as I can. Any suggestions? Plate separately or keep it all together? Could we not apply to transfer it to my mothers name who lives at the same address as the one on the log sheet, with presentation of a death certificate? I was able to transfer his car to my name when he died by doing that. Or do you mean that the difficulty would be just with changing the reg number? Sorry if I'm being dense. Paul223 Posted July 20, 2014 Report Share Posted July 20, 2014 (edited) Just fill out the change of keeper details, provide a copy of death cert and a quick note explaining why the registered keeper can't sign the change of ownership section and post it off special delivery (take photo copies of everything) It'll come back as a current v5 with same reg and yer mums details Then (and only then) talk about mot - tax and transfering / retention of number (why not keep the number in the family, sort of something passed on by yer dad?) and an age related plate. Losing the original reg will devalue the vehicle, but not by any serious amount! The main value will be in how solid / original and unmolested the vehicle is. There was an old catalogue picture of the interior of a brand new camper. Looks exactly the same as ours. Same fittings, same cushions on the seats, same tile-effect covering on the floors. Mungler Posted July 20, 2014 Report Share Posted July 20, 2014 Take a photocopy of anything you send to DVLA - they will lose it. Ideally keep the plate with the car for the history. Be skeptical of any plate valuation you get off the number plate companies - they spin BS to get the plate for sale on their webby, but all the while any plate is only worth what someone will pay - if they say it's worth £5k but ten people offer £1000 and there's no offer beyond, then it's worth £1k which is not worth the agg of getting it off the car, another back on the car and paying for each hop / certificate. Anything with X Z Y etc will only ever make it a cover plate. You can get a half decent cover plate from the DVLA auctions - one just ended last Friday (started Wednesday) and I got 9 CXG for £850 for a cover plate. Armsid is right, to change the reg we would have to reactivate the vehicle's records either by MOTing it or selling it. Too much hassle for too little advantage. Also we have the original brown card "Vehicle Excise Act Registration Book" which lists the vehicles ownership and road tax history from new in 1960. (Original 12 months tax £5-10 shillings. That sounds a lot of money for 1960). It would be a shame to change the vehicle's identity now. The number is effectively dormant, but selling the vehicle will reactivate the record and generate a new V5 for the new keeper and the reg number will be unchanged. We don't need to transfer ownership to my mother, we can sell it off the original V5 marked "deceased" with a covering letter. Thanks for you help chaps. Anyone want an Austin J2 camper van? Good runner ( well it was in 1979), original condition, sleeps three, needs new curtains and a bit of a service. Offers invited. I'll post some pics if I can ever get it out of the garage.
