After a bit of consideration and chatting, we went out and put a deposit down on a working cocker spaniel.

He is going to be a pet first but will look in to training him, i have ready the guide on here, which looks to be a sound guide and advice, but was wondering if anyone knew a gundog train in west yorks, that is good with cocker spaniels.

Got to wait another 4 weeks and then the inoculation period before, but nowt wrong with planning ahead

I'm not too clued up on whose who, but i have been told he is coming from good lines, Mother bred by Ian Openshaw out of FT CH Chyknell Gold Star and FT CH Danderw Druid & his Father bred out of FT CH Timsgarry Simpson and from FT CH Black Mamba lines.

Great stuff

My cocker has Timsgary Simpson In his pedigree I believe a simon tyres dog.

My dog is just back from 12 wks with Tom Skelly based just outside York.

My geography knowlage of Yorkshire is limited , but if it's close enough to you drop me a pm and I'll give you his number

Good luck

Paul

:good: You need to be planning now for now,not ahead. Make your mind up and be truly honest with yourself regarding what you really want from him.Don't be half hearted, if you aim to use him as a gundog, train for that but dont use the 'pet as well' line as an excuse for any failings. Good luck.

There's virtually no work to be done to make a pet out of him. :)

Mine lives in the house and acts like a pet to a degree but he is not allowed the same free reign as my wife's dogs as he is there as my working dog.

In the house he is fun and generally plays about with the other two but put your coat on and get a gun out or whistle and what a change, switches straight on.

You will enjoy him but remember from working stock he won't be docile and lazy.

The little fella won't be able to stay still long enough to pet if anything like mine and the others I've seen as a pup.

Prepare yourself, like most working type cockers the trailing lines are right in there. In many respects this can make them harder to handle and train once they start their independence adolescent phase. For now have fun and build trust but a bit of sage advice given to me by a top man was "no reason a good gundog cant be also a great pet, just remember the gundog bit must be in place first before the pet bit"
