Well the wife was going out horse riding and my father in-law was harvesting the wheat so I thought I would pop down and have an hours pigeon chasing.....

When I arrived I saw a few pigeons in the cornet of the field so I drove the Landy to the corner and set-up in the hedge. The wind was quite strong and the ground as hard as rocks but managed to get a reasonable hide up. I set-up with two bouncers, six fuds and five full body decoys - only a fraction of what I normally have but I was in a rush. Within a few minutes the first customer - a young dove which dropped to the first shot. I then missed some real easy shots - they were flying to me fast and then flaring to land and I was missing at 20 yards..... Then I missed some easy right to left and left to right..... Time to stop, compose and slow down. I was rushing and shooting over which for me means not mounting the gun right......

The next bird came in high from the left and I could see it from afar and watched it come low and then climb high, noticed the decoys and then swooped down low again. I slowly mounted the gun, ignored the gun and just concentrated on the bird and bang.... down it came. Still not feeling confident I waited for the next to come and this time it came from right to left. Swooped in over the hedge to my right and then shied away from the decoys but too late. I slowly mounted the gun, concentrated on the bird and down he came with 32g of no 6 to the head..... perfect shot. Feeling a little more confident I took the next bird crossing from right to left but the following bird I missed high again...... Back to slowing things down.....

I then received several calls from my daughter about some sleep over and it being my weekend did I mind....... then the ex-wife called and I ended up rather miffed. Just as I put the mobile away and picked up the gun and still seeing blood from the call a pigeon came in high and fast - I hardly saw it I just reacted and down it came.....

So the solution is to slow down or get the ex-wife to wind me up......

Two hours and 20 pigeons and one dove to the bag .
