I have owned dogs for forty years and I have had some good ones and some moderate ones for shooting purposes. All have been good friends. Jasper has the potential to be the best. His training is coming along nicely, just a few minutes each day, and he is responding very well. No matter what scent he is on he returns every time to the first recall whistle. His nose is exceptional. He has not been anywhere near a pigeon hide yet and I do not intend to take him out on game shoots next season.

His favourite play thing is a plastic swan neck from a down pipe which he spends hours carrying around and my socks and LDog's knickers which he extricates from the laundry basket.

What a idiot, sorry i didnt read the post properly, how do you know he will be better than the others mate at an early age.

What I said was that he has the potential to be the best. I base that on the fact that he loves me and is eager to please which will make him easier to train. He is also extremely obedient and responds well to the whistle and his nose is very good too. I can take him out for a walk in large open fields and when I arrive I often see pheasants running for cover. He naturally finds the best wind position until he has located the scent. I can then call him off with effusive praise.

I have never had spaniels before and I believe that I have been fortunate to have found a very special dog first time. I will not be doing very much with him in terms of game or pigeon retrieves for a good while yet.
