Keeping cool

We have the Aquamat dog coats, that work on evaporative cooling. Got ours at Betley Game Fair when it was roasting and the dogs soon stopped panting when they got them on. Surprisingly the dogs were not wet when we took them off as all the water stays in the coat and evaporates from the outside cooling the dog down.

Have an aircon in the kitchen which is running all the time at the moment.

It's simple be sensible, walk them early and if in a vehicle be careful. They will be fine in this heat as long as you leave them alone and they can get into shade. Mine spend the hottest time just on the stone floor keeps them nice and cool

Early and late, swimming, hosedown, lots of fresh drinking water kept topped up, no silly walkies on hot days and no car travel unless essential. Cant see why anyone might take a dog to a gamefair if they were not running it. Kennels are located in a very shady area

A must at all times. However, mine seem to drink next to nothing during blisteringly hot days yet the cold winter days and nights they drink loads.

location of kennels sun in morning shade afternoon shelter from wind and mine sleep on top of the boxes when its hot walks keep training to minimum i'am lucky got the beach just down the road so free run on beach to keep them trim I'v never seen any reason to cut the dogs coat just a good comb through now and then they seam to cast a lot of hair in the summer and thicken up in winter maybe cos they are kept outside all year round

Cant see why that might be unless the winter drinking reflects exercise levels being greater? Or change in food type? Whatever it sounds a little unusual to say the least. I am topping up water more than daily at present and hardly any in winter, not that they don't drink in winter there are just lots of puddles on the track then

My theories are..fluid loss more during colder months due to them being more active and well insulated/warmer at night. They are refilled more than twice daily but mainly because of molting fur bits blowing on to the water....fur balls. I have wondered if the water suppliers added something to the tap water this time of year for some reason ?.

They all eat lots more grass this time of year so maybe they draw moisture from that than you would think.

Dog coats insulate, both from cold and heat. Think Africa Lions etc. Best advise I can give is tell your pouch not to sunbathe during the day and not to run around like a dervish everytime you put your boots on!

Other top tips, let sleeping dogs lie during the hottest part of the day as they naturaly do when it's a wee bit warm.

:good: and a dog with a short coat feels heat from direct sun light far more than a dog with a thicker coat.Black coated dogs feel the heat more than white coated dogs.

The lion skins i have seen are all very short and they hunt at night when its far cooler. The males only sleep and fight from what i gather the Ladys do all the graft. I shouldn't push the thick coat insulating the sun out personally, try it for yourself first sunbathing in a sleeping bag

And the penguin skins I have seen are all very short. Lions feel the heat/suffer from the sun, more than any animal I can think of. :)

Of course there is also the giraffe that suffers badly from direct sunlight, given it's head is much closer to the sun.

UV intensity increases 10 percent for each 1,000 feet of elevation, so I don't think giraffes will have too much more of a problem than the rest of us!

Agree with short coats though, I just stripped my Border terrier and she seems muck more comfortable in the heat with just the undercoat.
