Stuck locking wheel nut and socket!

Hi all

I went to put the alloys back on my car today, only to discover that one of the locking wheel nuts wouldn't shift, even with a long bar. Eventually I tried so hard that I've distorted the head of the nut where the locking nut adaptor fits, so I can't even really put much force on it that way. I tried the old trick of hammering a tight socket on to it. That worked, and the socket turned - but it's only rotating the collar of the locking nut, not the nut itself. So now I've got a stuck locking wheel nut with a socket stuck on top of it!

Is there anything else I can try to get this free, or is it time to go to a garage? Some sort of drill / dremel and lots of sweating and swearing? I don't mind if the locking nut gets destroyed (it probably already is) but I really don't want to damage the stud in the wheel hub. Any thoughts?

Sounds weird but If you find a punch big enough and simply put it straight on the wheel nut and hit it hard enough then you should be able to just unscrew it by hand. It's how a guy in a tyre shop did all four wheels on my car when I lost the key. Hope this helps

Yup, sound weird, but works - I watched our mech supervisor at work undo a seized 3" pipe union using a 2lb hammer and his hands. Couldn't shift it with a 3 foot Stilson, but came off just by clouting it and turning by hand!

Thanks chaps. Unfortunately, I've already got a socket stuck on top, over the shroud. Guess I've got to get this off somehow first? Drill and dremel perhaps...

Try packing socket full of thick grease then hammer extension into it,if you are lucky hydraulic pressure will move it outwards.

I have spent many an hour trying to shift broken locking wheel nuts, i would recommend using a long breaker bar with a fair amount of pressure (note bought so it doesn't slip off) and while your applying the pressure get some one to whack the socket with a brass mallet. Has always worked but can take a little time but when your working with expensive wheels you don't wanna be risking it with a chisel, but if it's that stuck that may be your final option.

Hi sorry im in lincolnshire if the socket is really stuck put a long extension on it and a breaker bar and pull up on the long extension bar so it locks it up and try undoing if not try getting a welder to lock it all solid and heat from it will help aswell

No worries, thanks anyway.

 

As it happens, we've just got it off. My neighbour managed to get the socket off with a welder, a drill and lots of swearing. Then I got the collar off the locking nut, pounded the hell out of the remains, hammered a socket over it with a massive lump hammer, and got it off with a 3 foot long breaker bar. Victory! The moral of the story is don't hammer a socket on if the rotating collar still rotates. And I need a bigger hammer!
