My first shot with a 17

I had a ride out this afternoon with my .22 cz hoping to see an odd rabbit. At the far end of the hedge line on a green lane, i saw a red defender driving slowly along. Half hour later i was at the other end of the field when this chap came and introduced himself, he had permission to shoot the foxes on the same fields. We had a good natter, he told me he used a .17 and a .223. I told him i had a slot for a .17 but had never even fired one. Anyway while we were talking, a rabbit showed its self at just over a 100yds, this chap said i will get the 17, i thought he is going to give me a demonstration, As he went to fetch his rifle i pinged the rabbit with my range finder at around 114 yds, a comfortable head shot for me with my cz. The chap comes back with the 17, what does he do, he hands it to me, what do i do, i only go and miss.:lol:

I didn't register that! I've had some lucky shots at 80 yards but 114 an "easy head shot"? Maybe the rabbits grow much bigger near you...?

wish you lived nearer spandit

I have a field paced at 110 yds, can happily shoot rabbits at that range with my cz from the bipod, so it is more than do-able!

Have done it many many times kennet, its just some on here stick to the 50yds lol

Can be any thing I guess, such as not being used to a gun or trigger pull etc... very easy to pull a shot on a first attempt.

How did you felt it compared to the CZ?

The 17 felt very front heavy to me Mentalmac it was wood, mine is composite.

you sure your range finder wasn't measuring in feet instead of yards?

My range finder is pretty spot on

I had a .22 LR (Ruger 10/22) for many years, up until I bought a CZ 452 in .17 HMR. After a year of the .22 sitting in the cabinet and not being used I decided to sell it.

The .17 HMR is a great calibre (although the noise difference is definitely a downside). I have now purchased a Anschutz 1517 and fitted it with a Photon Yukon.

Generally both my rifles will drop bunnies on the spot at anything out to 150 yards. Just the marksman who lets the side down from time to time.

Happy shooting.
