4X4 - CB Radios - For show or actually used ?

Folks,

 

I keep seeing more and more CB antennas on 4x4`s, some even running two antennas.

 

Do any of you lot have CB in your 4x4 and if so how offen do you use it and what for ?

 

Also can anyone shed any light on why some have two antennas, it looks cool IMO but is there any practical reason ?

just fitted a cb radio . And yep a 1.4 metre stupid flappy aerial to my disco.
For one reason and one reason only .
The nearest pay and play day to me states you need a cb radio to "pay and play"
I can only assume if it all goes Tits up you can get in contact with the big 200hp tractor to get you out of the sticky stuff .
Well that's my reason any way .
But I can't lie I have had a little play with it from my house (right near m1)

usage is probably on the up as its legal to use them while driving.

Don`t have one on my car but back in the early 90`s me and mates used to use them to keep in contact before the days of mobile phones. I still remember sitting there at midnight saying 19 for a copy etc etc. I did have a weirdo turn up outside my house one evening using a signal meter or something in his car (a mini no truck) to track my signal down then the 20` aerial on the side of the house probably gave the exact location away. He tried to get me and mates to sneak out for a ride in his car !! We didn`t, but I expect if we had we would have ended up in some weirdo's bedsit.

It might not be CB but some other type of radio antenna. My brother inlaw had a massive antenna fitted to his Defender and he is a serious ham radio enthusiast. Him and his 4x4 buddies help out with the comms at motorcycle trials events and fell running races - there's often no mobile reception in these locations. You have to pass an exam to get the licence to use these radio frequencies.

Had one in the 80s as well Use one now when off road in groups to keep in contact. The twin aerials are connected & directional if the correct space apart ! (Roads/m ways are pretty straight & gives a longer reception down the road) Or they might be for different frequency units

Q659: Is it illegal to use a CB or two way radio whilst driving?

 

It is an offence to use a hand held mobile phone or an "interactive communications device", but there is an exemption for a two way radio which is designed or adapted -

(i) for the purpose of transmitting and receiving spoken messages; and

(ii) operates on any frequency other than 880 MHz to 915 MHz, 925 MHz to 960 MHz, 1710 MHz to 1785 MHz, 1805 MHz to 1880 MHz, 1900 MHz to 1980 MHz or 2110 MHz to 2170 MHz.

Ofcom states that you should be transmitting CB in the 27MHz range, if you are, you come within the exception and are OK. The exception was created because so many government and private organisations (e.g. taxis) use 2 way radios.

However, there is strong scientific evidence that any such activity (including fiddling with your CD player etc.) does raise the level of danger so far as accidents are concerned, so it is recommended that you do whatever you can to minimise use of transmitter buttons, tuning devices and volume controls. If something akin to hands free exists it would be a good idea.

Could well be a licensed radio amateur arial.

 

RAYNET provide emergency communications in the event of natural disasters ie the floods up north when a lot of the mobile phone towers went down and local phones went out. They liase with police fire and ambulance services who can't talk vehicle to vehicle between the services. Provide event communications for charity races like the midnight walk in our area all on a voluntary basis.

 

They are lots of fun too.

Well I have radio in my truck and when I'm out on the farm and fancy a break from shooting I do use it but I am a radio ham as well as pest/vermin shooter.

Last year I was on farm in cornwall switched radio on and spoke to a chap in washington state doing exactly the same (made interesting conversation)

Had one years ago, ok for traffic/speed camera updates when out in a truck, but local to me there was always some halfwit playing his records thinking he was running a pirate radio station when really they ended up sounding like a donkey p**sing on a biscuit tin!

It is illegal to use while on the public roads now sadly the plod have stopped it, although can be interesting during the night.

I have a nice firestick on my truck and if radio is boring or 5live is talking rubbish ill stick it on and listen in.

 

In todays world its a little dated due to the smart phone gen but still fun.

Good for when on a shoot day to talk to beaters ect. Nothing worse than trying to get hold of them in the middle of nowhere without a signal

i have one, which i use for green laning i have 2 aerials, smaller ones, one for CB radio and one for my radio.
