RSPCA, do their supporters know this?

To cut a long story short, I was speaking to a neighbour of a friend who has a Fox problem. Whilst talking to her the conversation some how got onto the RSPCA and that she used to work for them as an inspector(which surprised me as she was up for controlling the fox problem!)

She then informed that that the reason she left was that she was not happy with the RSPCA useing their funds to pay for the vet bills for people on Housing benefit! She ended up spending all her time dealing with abusive, rude people, demanding money for their vet bills.

It appears that if you are on Housing benefit you can get the RSPCA to pay for ANY vet bill!

I wounder how many supporters would think twice about donating their hard earned cash if they knew it was going to pay for some chav,s trophy dog, whilst lack of funds means that numerous animals are put down!

edit: title should say "Their" dont know how to edit title!!

I dont believe this is "quite right" I think their policy is to help those who cannot afford the full cost of treatment by having local agreements where they can refer sick animals to veterinary schools etc in the area who will treat for a reduced cost (about a 3rd of the cost at a private vet) but the reduced cost will still have to be met by the owner.

rspca have a fund set aside for people who cant afford to pay vet bills and it covers all the cost its not just aimed at people on benefits it could be a pensioner on a very tight budget that needs help

they dont cover all the cost just part, Cambridge branch site covers it better than most read here

It's a shame that the RSPCA gets so much poor press. I'm sure they do a huge amount of good work but from the stories you read on here and on other forums, I'm not surprised if donations are going down.

Let's be fair, would we rather a dog gets treated or dies in pain?

i agree, no one wants to see an animal in pain, but i cant help feeling it encourages people, who cant afford them, to have pets. i know there are exceptions, people who's circumstances have changed due to illness or redundancies or OAPs (they should be helped more!) etc. Maybe there should be a rule that if your career is "Benefit claimant" you should not be allowed to get a dog etc? or if you think you can afford the thousands of £s a dog costs, your benefits should be recalculated?Or if you need help with vet bills, make it a loan, not a gift!

Im also sure that they do alot of good work, but im also sure that they waste alot on silly court cases and pointless excercises like nursing injured certain pest species like foxs, rabbits and pigeons back to health and then releasing them!

My old man left the R.S.P.C.A 45 years ago , he was employed as an inspector in Nuneaton and after 6 months threw in the towel as he spent 99% of his time taking animals to the vets to be destroyed, apparently they used to stand the dogs in a box with a few inches of water in the bottom, put a lid on then turn on the mains ! I wonder how many donators know that the RSPCA were responsible for that happening to thousands of dogs and cats.

Many years ago I was out of work and had a little dog that one day got out of the garden and was run over and needed an opperation there was no way that I could afford to pay more than half the vet wanted £250 I contacted the RSPCA to see if they could help and got £20 in the end the dog did not have the opperation and recoverd after about three months but no thanks to the RSPCA it makes me mad when I see these wasters getting free treatment for there big guard dogs when jenuine people can get nothing.

Don't the PDSA do this kind of thing ? A few years ago one of my dogs tore an ear on a Sunday , my vets outsourced out of hours to the pdsa, the looks of amazement when I handed over my debit card to pay were unreal.

I did contact the PDSA and they said if you can bring her in to us about 30 miles away they would sort her out we just need to no where you live so I told them only to be told sorry you are out of our area try the RSPCA one of the benefits of living in the country it seems that ony townys get free treatment.

Yes the PDSA do it.

Believe it or not there are genuine hard working families who were born and bred here on benefits due to the poor management of the country including the limitless cheap foreign labour.

I have nothing against poor people but why do they have to have large dogs or even several large dogs or loads of cats for that mater what is wrong with having one small dog or cat.

My springer was a rescue dog-we got him because we cannot afford breeder prices-I am retired and when he broke his leg clean in half last week (he was 13) it cost me £549 to have him put to sleep and then cremated !!!. I know that vets need to earn a living but jeeez-if the same ever happens to our second dog I will not hesitrate to shoot her
