Suzuki jimny and vitara owners

Due to getting a small shoot sorted this year my younger sister is looking for a small 4x4 for feeding, picking up, and a general shooting vehicle. We have narrowed it down to either a jimny 1.3 vvt or a 3 door grand vitara 1.6 vvt, around a 2007-8 reg.

Would like some opinions from owners on real life mpg, and which out of the 2 may be the best to go for as haven't had too much experience with either, although im pretty sure the engines are pretty reliable.

Thanks.

Had a couple of Jimnys, Very pleasede with both of them and very reliable. Go anywhere with the right tyres and a bit of care. Changed to a Vitara because the driving position in the Jimny had started to hurt my damaged right knee. Be warned that some of the smaller engined vitaras don't have diff lock and low ratio so check in advance.

Best of luck,

David.

Just bought a grand vitara a few weeks ago solely as a temporary car for my shooting. It's a 2 ltr diesel and I love it. It's on an 05 plate short wheel base. Cost £2,800. I bought this because my range rover had just become 4 years old and I wanted a 4x4 to keep me going until I sold it and bought another. I was so impressed with the little Susie, as I call it that I didn't trade the RR in for a newer model but traded it in for an estate car instead. I'm not comparing Susie with the RR but value for money it is brilliant. I will now keep Susie, in fact I picked the estate up last Monday drove it home and haven't used it since. I drive Susie everyday.

on jimny`s that age, lift the rear seats and check for rust, other problem is kingpins, take it for a road test and brake from about 55mph, if you get a steering wobble look at them before wheel balance and warped discs, there are shims available from Suzuki to increase the preload and tighten them up

I have a SWB 1.6 Grand vitara , if anybody tells you it does more than 30 mpg they are telling lies , with AT tyres i am getting 25mpg , very useful off road but **** MPG and stupidly expensive parts .

running round I'd agree, I've just been on a long run with it and got over 30 mpg and it's the 2 ltr petrol

I've got a Jimny. I get about 30mpg in mixed driving (short journeys) and around 35 on longer journeys. It's not fast, but it goes everywhere I need to and more, it's very characterful and it's good fun! Just looking to change the original bridgestone tyres (which don't do well on wet roads) for an A/T tyre such as the Yokohama Geolandars, which should be better both off road and on.

IIRC, Jimnies are lower tax bracket than the Vitara - mine is pre 2001, so I pay £125 a year. Jimnies are not huge, but you can fit a fair bit of stuff in the back if you put the rear seats down.

I have an older Vitara (M reg) - brought from Bullet1747 above haha.

I LOVE it.

I had a LWB Shogun before hand with mud tyres and all that, but prefer the vitara, it's like it skips over the rough stuff.

And dead easy to park and fit into odd places haha

glad you are still enjoying mate , I wouldn't have any other 4x4

Mate bought a 2003 jimny a month ago & although happy with it so far he says its £220 a year to tax, not the best on fuel with a full motor & severely lacks space. We cant fit all the decoying gear in the back with 2 dogs so we end up taking my grand vitara. Not be bad when we're game shooting though

Loving it mate, caused some problems with it from being a tiny bit silly with it... but it still lives and just needs some time spent on it soon. A strange little air sensor thing on it broke of so I glued it back on with super glue, perfect lol. :-). Hope you are well.

Could almost do with a little trailer that all the decoying gear could be stored in and towed.

Following on from my post No 5.

I have just filled my Vitara up again after 17 days of use. I generally keep within about a 10 mile radius of home all driving is on minor roads and farm tracks sometimes in 4 wheel low drive. I have done 218 miles and have averaged 31.8 mpg.

I'm very happy with that, so those of you who think they're juicy. It may be the way they're driven.

I have no idea what i get with the green gilbert and don't care as it is the perfect truck, stinks inside, i can jump up onto the bonnet to check over hedges and scrape it down hedgerows with no care in the world & it goes through the sticky stuff.

For what your sister wants a 4x4 for would a older Discovery not be better, more carrying capacity ideal for dogs picking up on shoot days and around the same mpg as Suzuki 4x4's.

Lots of farmers have them for a reason.

I run a little Rav4 as it suits our needs, wife bouncing it round car parks, but have had a couple of landrovers in the past and pick ups.

I would also consider where most of her miles will be done, car and quad with rack or trailer for shoot may be the best option.
