What big car for a small budget???

Hi,

I may have to sell my Disco 3 pending a house move, so will need something quite big, for not a lot of money. I need something that is around the £2000 mark and will be okay for 3 months worth of use. I have 3 dogs, so I need something with a big boot and that is comfortable and reliable for about 1,000 miles per month.

I will replace it in the new year with a newer car, so just need something temporary. I have been looking on autotrader and wanted to see your views on the following -

2000 Discovery

2001 Mercedes e class estate

2000 Shogun sport

2002 Volvo V70

2003 Saab 95

All are round the 100k miles and all are around the budget. I don't need a 4x4 but I really like them.

I'm tempted by an older discovery, but I'm sure that would be a bit risky.

What do you think?

Terrano sounds good, I'll take a look.

Ideally I can sell it for what I bought it for a few months later.

I will need the short term cash, that is why I will need to sell the disco. In the new year my bonus will kick in, so I can buy the car I want then.

How about a Nissan terrano? Should be able to get a fairly late one with around 2k. Had mine for about 3 years and can't really fault it for what I use it for, which is dog carrier/trailer puller/field use and general road work.

I agree but I don't think they have a right lot of luggage space, I know for a fact that most ordinary estate cars (Astra for example) have more luggage space.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking them as I think they are great, I have had a few and still have one now.

I also have an X-trail which really is enormous inside. Fits the bill better for the OP in my opinion.

Vectra estate have a massive boot, saab 95 are basically vauxhalls but smaller the 2.3lpt will return 40mpg on a run with a steady foot. Skoda octavia estate if you can find a none taxi one good solid cars,Peugeot 406. Got a 300tdi disco as a daily driver, took me a good few months and some blood sweet and tears to get it nearly mechanically perfect, does 24-28 mpg but will run of a 75% cooking oil £0.74Lto diesel mix,ps it does stink a bit tho.

Mitsubishi shogun for me too. I have an L200 which is perfect for shoving wet Spaniels in the back and keeping the front cab area nice and clean with no smell of wet dog! Not sure you could get an L200 for your budget but the shogun is a great car as well.

Shogun sport perhaps (l200 with estate car body but not cheap to run!) the vectors is boring but huge load space 2 up, not got the kudos of the passant or eclass but for same money you will get a 5 year old car than a 15 year old!
