Alive with mackerel

Long story short; fished from a shore mark in Plymouth Wednesday evening and it was madder than I have ever seen it in 40+ years. There has been a lot of bait fish sprats/whitebait/callthemwhatyouwill and the mackerel are definitely in.

We watched them casually pushing them up against the wall of Mount Wise harbour and getting their fill and the weather was atrocious, bucketing rain and howling headwind which would help push the shoals against the walls. ten minutes and my wife had half a dozen with a single ball weight and a 2" eddystone eel. I tried using a big 4" spoon, 5" plug, 8" eddystone eel to try for bigger bass and pollack and still the mackerel hit them.

I have a video and will try to upload it when I get home.

The local sea swimming pools are full of the bait fish and there seems no end of them, if you are in the area have a go!

I was on on the beach in South Devon. The Mackerel chased the whitebait onto the shore, we collected kilos of them

I used feathers and pulled 110 mackerel out.... happy days

The sea looked as if it was boiling as the mackerel chased the little whitebait .... it was an amazing sight

No that is mine at Mount Wise and yes, the big kid (wife) really enjoyed it as it has been 30+ years since she fished and she wants to do more. That means a bit of a double edged sword, does she expect lots of fish every time, probably not (?), but fishing from the canoe or some pier in Scotland may not be the same.

Loads in Cornwall - where you going?

I was on the beach last week and had to stop fishing as I couldn't have used them all as I was in the caravan - took 15 in a matter minutes even had some on the lure whilst trying for bass whilst they were in close, made some happy campers that night with free mackerel. They were less than 40yds out where I was so no need to punch the feathers out 100yds+

Went to Pwllheli yesterday in the hope of catching some. Nothing doing though.

I didn't even get my rod out of the car, just looking at the sea and the folk that were fishing told me enough.

Cracking day though, quite happy to just sit and watch the sea for an hour or two..

Might try Anglesey today. Any hotspots of note? Can't find any positive reports of mackerel other than in Cornwall.

I caught shed-loads down south but there were fellas close to me catching nothing at all...... I think unless conditions are clearly bad like silt sitting near the shore, I'd still have a little try. Some days they are near the surface, some days low down always worth trying different techniques and feathers and spinners.

Well there's naff all at Mackerel Rock today.

Saw one caught by a fella in a boat, nothing except an undersized pollack from shore.

Beautiful day though, it's roasting!

if it stays like that youll have to rename it rock rock or shorten it to rock , good numbers up here again but still no decent Pollack its getting a bit worrying

I can remember fishing for mackerel at Dawlish Warren as a child. The sea used to ripple with them and we saw Dolphins at the edges going mad catching them. They were in every evening for days while we were camping there. I had my first rod a green 5ft fibreglass and self casting reel and some metallic spinners, spent all my holiday money on them. By the end of the week everyone on camp had been presented with Mackerel and even the dogs were fed up with them cooked and mixed in with their dog meal. Happy days.

Purely for info as I'm in Exmouth, they were porpoise. We used to get pods of them. I don't know when they stopped coming - they were there when I left to join the RAF but weren't when I came back home.
