Pigeon Shooting in Norfolk

Good evening Gents,

I don't usually say a lot about shooting the pigeons. A lot of it wouldn't be a fat lot of interest anyway and this isn't a lot better.

It's been tough shooting any half decent bags even soon after the rape cut , then the barley and wheat. But the last three times i've shot the stubbles we've been getting 50 plus which I reckon makes for a reasonably good day out.

So a hide buddy returns from holiday in the south west and things come together. Stuff goes in the truck and we're away not too early but a bit before midday.

We have a good bit to look at and see pigeons in vitualy every field we recce. One of which is self sown rape that has shot well recently but the buzzards were there and spooking the birds. Two more fields of self sown and a newly drilled field have birds on the ground. Good god ,choices where to set up!

Next up we run in to this deer old buoy whose seen it all before. "Get up there on tha corner". So we dew. And his advice is sage. The field is a reasonable size ( 130 acres of wheat stubble) and the sage one reckons he will shoot a few beside a nearby copse, so he is happy with the idea.

We're all now anti "Shirley the Whirley" in deepest darkest Norfolk. Those pigeon magnet things. We all agree they are dustbin material. They've had their day, don't you think?

We set up a gret ol' hide fit for six Romanians but there's just us two Norfolkmen, it's a Hilton hotel of a hide. Six nets and a dozen hide poles later.....

The wind is straight in blowing intermitent force 4-5 WSW straight up the rear end. So the deek pattern is ten shells on springs 25 yards to the left in a shoe and the other dozen to the right. This is all headed up with a flapper and turbo angel flapper. Nice runway in front of the hide.

They're coming in undercarriage down before our ***** get back to the hide.

We settled down after a bit. Missed a few at the end of the barrels. Pleased they came straight down the middle of the pattern. Bish bosh, quite straightforward pigeon shooting for a change. We shot a few right and lefts once we woke up. Guns were Beretta 28g and 12g. Cartidges Eley VIP 24g no 6 shot and Eley HB Pigeon 32g no 6.5 shot

We shot from about noon though to five -thirty with all the gear in the motor by then. Picked up 57 and the old sage popped a good few on the stubble with a few behind. A fun day was has by all. We had a lot of oinking from behind but kept 'em off with a tune of "Apple Sauce".

Thanks for reading and all the very best with your pigeon shooting.

Nice to see a write up from you Nigel, magnet dustbin material , not on your nelly :) a decent bag can be shot without them though as you have proved .

I must say you hide netting is not very good , you can see your chair through it plain as day

You should ha sin tha hide Ade, it was impressive if I say so meself but he pulled it down when i went to get the truck. Then I remembered you mentioned you were in to internet dating.........

Those Bergera chairs in the pic which Teal sells are made in heaven BTW.

Nice write up, but don't keep telling them boys from up North were got a few pigeons down our way. I think P C is finding them a bit thin on the ground round his way mind you it might have bin him who sent them down hear with all the stick hes been given them......Well done with a back to basics bag.

Cheers MM, i tried. Old PC is a bit of a legend. I like reading his posts but we're safe.

How have you been doing? What do you reckon about the rotary? When they came out I used to swear by them and often used to use two in tandem with fresh dead birds. They worked brilliant.

Now I find the birds flare away. The only time they work properly is very very windy days 30 MPH at least. I have two other rotary machines that carry light decoys that sometimes work better than the ones loaded with fresh dead birds. Maybe this is a bit bizarre for rotary aficionado's?

I get on way better with battery powered flapper devices which pull birds in loads better IMHO. Also bouncers can be briliant on certain days but not so sharp on others. Sometimes i've put these across the wind which is unfashionable.

Good luck with your shooting.

Morning Whitebridges....I use the rotary less and less nowadays, 3 or 4 weeks ago before the wheat was cut I did find it handy on the laid areas simply because we had so much of it and the pigeons had a huge choice of areas to feed on, but if I go on a field where pigeons are feeding I leave it in the motor and just use pigeons on cradles and I do the same as you put the floaters crossways to the wind as the movement look more natural. But if they are going elsewhere I do put it out to try and bring the odd one in range for a shot or two. As for the amount about, its now getting quiet where there been shot fairly regular and there are a lot where the land is now out of bounds due to game shooting soon to start. The pigeons are not that daft they soon find out where they can eat and rest in peace ,and you cant blame them for that can you...............Good luck for the coming season ....M M.

Interesting you're findings are the same with the rotary MM. I often start with one but usually end up stopping it and taking it down after the birds start flairing away. I just seem to be getting on better without it, certainly over the last few outings.

There seems to be plenty of birds about and hopefully we'll be able to get a few on some rape drilling for chickweed coming through on the stubbles. ATB
