Friday saw us heading out looking for beans as the week before we had shot birds bursting at the seams. We looked at wheat stubbles on the way but not much about and we came to a thirty acre bean field as we drove onto it we were stunned into silence as it had no birds on it at all , we drove round the headland and not a bird came out of the trees, so we had a coffee and watched twenty minutes later we left after seeing nothing at all . We continued to drive and saw very little in the way feeding birds untill we past the bacon wagon at which we saw the flightline the other week and sure enough it was as strong . As we approached the feeding field it must have had three/four hundred birds on it. So a quick knock on the door of the farm only to be told the Farmer is away and the farm hand will not give us permission. OK Plan B drive back up the flightline and try to ambush them on the way. it was now 14.00 and the wind was getting stronger with a hint of rain. We obtained permission on a stubble field which had been muck spread , not the ideal , but they were flighting over it high. We set up with thawed birds, two on the magnet , two angels and eight stand ups . It then decided to rain hard for the next two hours but we were under the brolly and the birds came within range lower because of the rain. The rain stopped at 16.00 and we had two hours of sunshine at the end of which we packed up and picked up one hundred and forty one birds.

Today as normal we set out in a different direction and found small pockets of birds on all the stubbles. we had a good look around but did not find enough birds to set up for. We had in the back of our minds the flock we had seen the day before and as we hit the flightline we had not disturbed the birds on the field. We drove back to see if they were on the field again and yes it was covered , as we watched a Farmer from down the road stopped to talk and he saw the flock and moaned that the guy who owned the land would not allow shooting but the birds were going onto his wheat and could we shoot it for him. We have shot on this farm before and had a rocket of the Farmer leaving tyre marks on his tracks???

So we drove onto the farm to have a good look only to find that his wheat was still standing not combined so we could not shoot the wheat but decided to shoot the grass next to it as our best option.

We set up with twelve fresh birds from the day before all on spkes as if feeding on the clover . The wind was strong and it made the birds very sporting coming from all directions and this made it exciting shooting. We finished at 18.00 and picked up ninety birds and the shooting was very memorable.

Excellent two days results P C, my days start off very similar to yours struggling to find some , but mine normally ends up how it started. We don't often hear much of your shooting buddy who must put in the same amount of work as you to achieve those big bags, so well done to him as well. And by the way P C do you get sponsored wearing the same shirts for your photos........just a thought.

DB , as you say is the spotter I'm the driver. When we are in the hide we take it in turns to shoot and and mop up any wounded birds it's not very often that you get a follow on shot is one shooter could get the same bag. The banter between us is unique as we both have a method of communication which may seem to others as gibberish but we both understand each other . We will probably end up on the same ward in the mental home

With regard to the shirt sponsorship I only have one shirt, I also have this annoying squeak when I walk or I must have had relations from Yorkshire?????????

If I ever make a visit birmingham, I going to arrange to pay homage to the budda of pigeon shooting! Well done pc. 100 + bags are rare occurance is this part of the world. Although, transfer of a virus from fishermen to pigeonshooters, referred to in the latin as taurrus crappus is subject to frequent outbreaks! We just dont have the holding woods. Plenty of grain, but very little rape. Before the onset of rape in GB, n ireland used to get big numbers in the winter. Those days are gone, because the migration from GB seems to be getting less and less. I pray for a november, december 2014 that blankets scotland and england with snow on a strong easterly wind!

I referring to wisdom, rather than appearance. I would have said godlike, but I think hes a bloke with excessive beard and open toe sandals and white cotton robe? The midlands of ireland are agricultural chalk and we, unfortunately are the cheese.
