So my search for a winter run about continues

Having looked at various vehicles I have narrowed it down to these three.

I have found a few xamples of each in good condition with under 100k for just under of 2k GBP

I do short journeys everyday to work and back (12mile round trip)

Then longer journey most weekends to the estuary, approx 90mile round trip. With of trips elsewhere.

The roads I often travel on are mostly narrow twisty roads and up here we do often get a good splatter of snow.

Also do some tame off roading, farm tracks and across soggy stubbles.

Whatever I get I will throw some a/t tyres on.

I will be popping down to Yorkshire a couple of times also to visit family and do a bit of wildfowling en route..so abit of motorway work there.

Main question is reliability I suppose.

I like a gutsy engine for the longer journeys. Although comfort isn't a huge deal to me.

From reviews I have read they all seem to be 22-24mpg combined...how far out is this?

I currently run a v6 vectra averaging around 26mpg so fuel consumption doesn't bother me too much.

Any points (positive and negative) would be appreciated.

Thanks

When you spend that kind of money you have to take your chances I'm afraid. You may get lucky and get a car that never needs anything doing or get one and a month later the head gasket goes even though it had a full service history. I'd go with the better chance and get the Japanese shogun. Better build quality in general than the others.

We have a 2001 Shogun Sport 3.0 V6, had it for 7 years. On a long run it gets around 25 mpg if you drive steady. Like Ferguson-Tom says though, 16 - 18 is the norm. That said, I have BFG AT's on it and it goes anywhere I have tried to go, the build quality is reasonable, it has been ultra reliable and is comfortable and pleasant to drive (but not exciting!!). We have done long trips all over UK in it and have been very happy.

Downside is that when it does have any problems the spare parts are quite pricey, although Milners carry the more common items.
