Having only shot a friends 17 hmr for the first time a week ago and shot a friends .22 lr for a few years I can honesly say what a cracking little round I don't personnaly hold a fac but have been toying with the idea for ages, having the finance for only one outfit I would choose the 17 it takes all the thinking out it no rick's, dead flat, 223 quick and not as much damage to the rabbit as I expected' but still one hellova whack' I wouldn't think of head shooting a fox at 100 yrds with a .22lr no matter what velocity round I was using but with the 17 it's gonner realy opened my eyes good things do come in small packages

for me it would be the .22lr i have a hmr and .222 but my go to gun is the lr love it and you still need some stalking and field craft to get close enough where as the hmr and triple you can sit up and cover whole fields which is fine when it's pest control.

i also have some low power .22 rounds great for up to air rifle range's,

got into the habit of only taking hmr and triple out and i felt i was loosing some field craft as it was getting too easy,

also like the 410 hushpower great for wondering about and not a problem if your near buildings for noise

2 points on that

1. No gun shoots flat let alone dead flat

and

2. Hmr 2550 fps a .223 3300+ fps

so nearly 1000 fps different

just an observation

Colin

sorry 3 points

3. You do still get ricks

What would your gun of choice be for a casual evening walk about looking for rabbits?

I think much depends on your shooting style and topography.

Do you want to walk fast and shoot springing rabbits? Use as shotgun and maybe a modded one

Do you walk slowly and almost stalk them in areas where you can get into 50 ish Metres? Use a .22lr

Do you shot in open ground where you need to take longish shots on rabbits? Use a .17HMR

Or you could REALLY learn to stalk rabbits, and get to 25 -30 yards and use the (bolt action) .410
