Photocopying FAC

It has been covered not long ago and people will give you loads of different opinions on what is legal and what isn't but I always leave the original in the car and have

a photo copy in my gun slip so if I'm asked to produce it by the bill the worst that will happen is a walk to the car.

In case I drop or lose my SGC I keep a copy in the pocket of my gunslip and the original at home. I have blacked out the address on the copy in case I lose it as I don't want the finder to know where guns are kept. And if stopped by the police I can produce my driving licence with address and matching mugshot. Some may criticise this practice but I'm comfortable with it.

And, as far as copyright is concerned, I recall reading somewhere that you can take one copy of a copyright document for personal use.

I always carry the original on my person whenever I have a gun with me. Can't see why you would need to do anything different.

You could loose the thing and after five years it falls to pieces along the fold lines. One of Mine was really getting tatty and one gunshop said that it was getting illegible. Every plod and feo will tell you something different. Several times I have been told that a copy is acceptable as it only carries the proof that you have the details on you. They can check. >> COPY.

I've had shotgun certificates since they were little white folded cards in the sixties. Never lost one and never had one fall to bits. Funny enough I have a diamond ring, never lost that or had it fall to bits either. ( being a bit sarky there but couldn't resist it)

The point I'm making is you just have to be careful and look after it. Because it is important.

As above, although mine did fall to bits eventually. In justification I am out with a gun of some sort very regularly throughout the year and they were transferred from one pocket to another, sat on, got wet, folded and unfolded that many times until my RFD was having to piece bits of them together before he could enter ammo etc on them. I told licensing I'd put them through the washer and they sent me crispy new ones. :) They still go everywhere my guns go, but not treated as roughly.

put em in your PW licence holder, then in slip.

I drive to perm, take gun out of slip and leave slip in van...with the licence and signed permission in it...

If plod wants to see my licence then he can walk back to van with me .....without doubt the excercise will be beneficial for him....

HOWEVER....if you do want to make a copy, then from my understanding of copyright laws...which is NOT a legal opinion you understand...it is quite legal to make ONE copy of your licence (and shrink it/laminate it if you wish) for your own personal use. (this applies to most documents, books and "reports" and magazines are different, up to 5% or the best part of ONE chapter is allowed for study purposes). Where there MAY be a problem of course is that the copy is "unattested" and therefore NOT, strictly speaking a legal document and as such a strict (jobsworth) plod may refuse to accept it and then you are in the same position of "not having your licece with you"....I do beleive also that to avoid accusations of "fraud" you should make sure that the copy contains the words "this is a copy of the licence which is in my possession" or some such other wording.

I recall the Bill Harriman article and the substance of this was you should not copy SGC etc and passports but there were letters later in Shooting Times (I think) effectively saying a black and white copy was not an attempt to forge a copy and thus for the average plod a copy gave him the information he needed to check you are who you are and you are entitled to carry a gun. One letter concerned the gun itself (a few plods seemed to think they needed to check gun carried against guns owned) but you just have to point out, calmly, this is a bit like being a named driver on motor insurance ie you don't have to own the gun/car to use/drive it!

Have decided this year to photo licence onto iPhone which is always with me - overcomes the issue of forging and gives plod or any other meddling person a nice picture of me that they can expand to compare if in doubt. That copy always became a soggy mess whichever pocket Ikept it in and one less thing to worry about. We get quite a few antis after us and there is always the worry plod might get called if thingss get heated as they have done from time to time.

There is absolutely NOTHING ILLEGAL in photocopying your own FAC or SGC and using it as a copy to verify you have one. Someone show me legislation where it states it is illegal!

There may certainly be issues if you try and use a photocopy for any illicit means, and you need the original for a number of situations.

Fraud issue not a problem with greater access to PNC ie even the thickest plod can make a quick phone to check car/driver/gun licence validity. This is why MOTis now a sheet of white A4 paper printed at point of pass. It's all on the 'puter. As I said have got mine on iPhone as plod can now check photo etc w/o ned for me to have licence with me.
