Magic Two Days

The weather has been very dry for a good period of time and has allowed the Farmers to get all the crops combined. So Friday saw us heading for the field that we had the two hundred plus last week only to find it being worked. We had a look around and the birds were still trying to drop on the field with the tractor working, we asked the driver how long he would be and he replied all day. Can we shoot with you working the other fields around "No You Might HIt Me". So we went for a drive around and found all the birds heading for those fields . We had to find a method of shooting that constant flow of birds. We decided to shoot the stubble field down wind of the best field on the assumption that our shooting would spook them to our decoys. It was now 12.00 and we set up , twelve thawed birds all on spikes, in the first hour we had about twenty birds but they were very shy of the decoys , so all the shooting was at range. It was steady all day and at 17.00 my game dealer phoned to ask how many we had shot and to get an idea of how many he could pick up on the night. I told him approx one hundred and he said he would see me later. Well the last hour of shooting was magic as it started the reverse flightline back to the roost wood behind the worked fields. It was magic DB and myself were just managing to reload after each others shots and it was constant for the last hour . We finished the day picking up two hundred and twenty six pigeons and five crows and jackdaws. When I returned home the dealer was waiting and pleased that we had doubled the estimate.

Saturday saw us as normal heading in a different direction as to not shoot the same flock two days running and within a couple of miles of the city boundry we found a ten acre stubble field rammed with pigeons. We saw the Farmer and he said OK but do not drop any shot on the buildings inside the compound. We drove back to the field to check it out, with the easterly wind we would have field in front of us, MOD buildings to our left , a housing estate to our right and a public park to our rear. We both looked at it and said NOOOOO!!. It would be a nightmare.

We drove on looking at a further four farms with only small numbers of birds and no joining birds. We eventually came up on a flightline down a valley to a large complex of wheat and barley stubbles , the birds were crossing them both so we set up on the fence so we could shoot both fields. It was now 13.00 when we started shooting with six decoys on spikes from the day before on both fields . We decide to shoot the wrong way to the wind so that we did not have to shoot into the sun, this made the shooting interesting as we took it in turns to shoot as we would be waiting then the birds would appear from the back of us with the non shooter screaming " This Side". Some birds crossed the fence when shot but when we packed up we had 106 on the barley field and 152 on the wheat field with two crows. So the total pick up was Two hundred and fiftyeight pigeons and two crows. I text the game dealer for the pick up when I get home .

It was just two Magic Days

Absolutely fantastic, a weekend of shooting to remember PC!! Out of interest how many pigeons do you shoot on average over a year, the bags you knock up on such a regular basis are phenomenal :)

It varies between 7 and 9 thousand a year, but with me going away each year for two or three months the year is nine months. With me being away for May, June and July I miss out on the spring rape and downed cereals.

Yes , constant hiss, I now wear Cens Digital which help on the shooting. I've lost 50% on my left ear and 25% on the right. It just coincides with the wife sitting in the car on my left???????????

I also purchased Cens Digital from the Midland Gamefair last year and find them great, I have had very severe Tinitus for about 10 years, and have lost 75% hearing in my left ear and 50% in the right, I wear two hearing aids which i find greatly reduces the hissing and ringing noise. I believe all this is due to shooting thousands of cartridges in the 60's & 70's with no ear protection.

I was told by the Ear Specialist to give up my game shooting, but i would never do that as its my life! But since buying the Cens Digital i hear no cartridge bang or blast, and have no bad headaches the following day after shooting.

Firstly, superb gents. Excellent results.

That poor springer can't even stand at the end, bet he enjoys his dinner and a nice nap when he gets home.

Regards

Fatty

Yes he's done in at the end of the day, he has the uncanny knack of knowing when a birds is winged, it may be the expletives from the hide but he will rush out from the hide and chase the bird across the field till it drops and come back with his head held high only to be admonished for running out.
