Deformed Pigeon

Hi Guy's,

Has anyone else seen a pigeon like this?

Shot this PM when breasting noticed a hole in the breast next to the keel bone that I could put a finger into.

It did not look like an old injury, no scarring and the muscle was intact.

I've had birds with keel bones out of shape, but nothing like this.

P.S. it went in the fox trap.

Cant see the picture but years ago I had a load of pigeon flight over so I picked a target and conected. When the dog brought it back it was the most disformed bird that I have ever seen. everything from beak to tail feather and feet seemed to be in a mutated form it was really manky & I did it a favour. It didn't look different from all of the rest of the flock in f;ight and was keeping up with the others.

I had one a while back which was a bit odd:

The pic isn't great, but the bone itself was perfectly formed each side...

I've had many over the years with deformations of the breast bone. It must be quite common, but I expect most don't see it as the birds go off to the dealer in feather. I have no idea why they are like that :hmm:

Belated reply from BIL:

The defect on the first pigeon is possibly due to a pellet or may be a
healed wound from a bird of prey. Either way, the bird is lucky to have
survived the wound. The second pigeon has a healed fracture of its keel
(breast bone). This is probably from hitting a wire whilst in flight.
