auto in mud and snow

I had one of the first auto Discos in 1994, sold it at 274,000 miles, then has a TD5ES and sold that at 262,000 miles.

Far better than manuals in dodgy conditions. I did get the ES stuck but I had driven where I should not when i thought my next door neighbour had crashed her helicopter. No issues what so ever with either gearbox. Just change the oils and filters.

Looking at a w reg range rover v8 that a friend is selling cheap

Its the 4l v8 with a 4speed automatic box...

What are automatics like to drive in snow and off road, do they drive well in the snow and mud?

Auto is very good indeed off road and in the snow, a one armed man used to take on most and win with his auto converted landy in trails. If you watched Top Gear in Iceland (were they were lighting tires to re-seat them) the locals used auto.

I've got a Series 2 Disco TD5 auto and it's absolutely fine off road even with road-biased tyres (never used it for anything really challenging mind you). I wouldn't comtemplate a manual now that I've had an auto. It suits the vehicle much better than a manual 'box. LR clutches and manual gearboxes aren't exactly the nicest to use in experience...

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a N reg Disco 1 auto, with the right tires it's almost unstoppable off road.

The only down side to mine is going down steep hills, 1st gear does not engine break that well and will just over rev itself, so you need to be on the brake a lot.

I had exactly the same thing with my auto disco, my mates manual was much better on slippy hill descents.

Other than that they are great.

I wish my defender was auto but it's a fortune to convert a td5
