Discovery 3 And 4 Ground Clearance

I've had my 04 Discovery 2 from new and it has covered 147K and I keep having the same discussion with my son who says I should go for a Disco 3 or 4 Commercial before I lose too much on my car. I think I should buy a low mileage Disco 2 , Td5 or V8 auto and put it in stock till mine goes the way of all Land Rovers. Whenever I come up behind a 2 or 3 they look very low at the back end and I wonder about ground clearance. In my current disco I can manage most off road conditions without raising the air suspension, when I used to go fishing to one section of the river I had to raise the suspension to get through after a few months the air bags failed due to mud trapped between the rubber when lowered. My question is do others who have 3or4 discos have problems off road. I do not want to go on Landyzone as they are all anoraks and would totally confuse the question

A good friend of mine has a disco4 and it's a hell of vehicle and very capable off road. It is however a money pit in terms of running costs and garage repairs. He still misses his D2.

The problem could be finding a good d2 with low miles on.

I had a td5 for nearly 10 years great car. The only fault was the air bag suspension, had the bags replaced twice. My brother in law had springs fitted to his but the ride wasn't as good. I have had a Disco 3 for 14 months and its very comfortable its like a luxury car. Had no issues with clearance and only had to raise the suspension a couple of times. It does look lower at the back, I think its having the spare wheel underneath. However I have spent more on the Disco 3 in 14 months than I did on my td5 in the whole time I owned it. Go for a td5 low mileage if you can find one?

I have a Disco 4 XS, not quite three years old yet and I've only done 28000+ miles in it but as far as off road use this one is fantastic.

It is the first Disco I have had without any trouble but due to the guarantee running out in January I am getting rid of it.

The Rover garage has offered me 30k so I am wondering what they will sell it for !

I am considering a Volvo CX 60 as I'm not as active as I used to be so a car will do me now.

So as it is at the moment I can recommend the Disco 4.

I wouldn't have thought clearence woul be an issue on both the disco 3 And 4. Air suspension to its off road setting you're getting 310mm and also bear in mind that, If you do happen to come into contact with the ground underneath the vehicle the system will let you know and will tell you to go into extended off road height; press and hold the up button and it'll lift you higher. That's definitely on discovery 4 not sure about the 3..

 

On my dad's Lr experience day the instructor told my dad to try it, when we got out of the vehicle it was seriously quite high up tbh,

 

All in all I shouldn't think the clearence is an issue

Disco 4 utter money pit. dont bother.

 

Disco 3ES TD5, just sold one at 262,000 miles, good tool, a bit un reliable after 180K though. Very capable and comfortable, tows 3.5 tonnes. Auto Diesel ES is the way to go, fox shooting with heated seats is sweet !!. Only downside was the light output from the headlights, not that good. My current Defender is far better.

 

Also ran a Disco 200 series (94) auto from new to 272,000 miles, that was also a good old bus. Dont like the 300 series Discos but have only driven a couple.

 

Ground clearance is not an issue, both my Discos often carried half a ton of wheat. Just shod them with Grabber ATs or BFGs, quiet on road and go more or less anywhere off road, even across ploughed fields if they are dry.
