6.5x55SE Posted October 10, 2014 Report Share Posted October 10, 2014 This happened during a Pinkfoot Goose study in Norfolk Anser2 ( Robert ) probaly can remember the year and young lady doing the study. Having taken a call a large number of Pinks was doing damage to a cereal crop being a Sunday i took my two Labs and walked the Geese off and kept doing so for some time when i noticed i was being watched by the Lady doing the Goose study, driving over to her for a chat she mentioned that she was hoping to find a Banded/Ringed Pink joking i said Well i will be shooting them tomorrow I'll shoot it for you. Having made plans to take a friend in the morning ( monday ) i was sorting my gear the phone rings someone from Stoke on Trent i had taken a week before says Hey this afternoon i saw 1500 - 2000 Pinks heading Norfolk direction. Monday morning standing in the hedge on the field of damage my friend was laying into me about having a Pop Gun ( 20GA ) and only Six cartridges, hardly had it begun to break light when it was my turn to take the peee Big Time as my six cartridges had scored three R/L at Pink's with all the pee taking my friend kept saying I'm Goose scaring and he was missing on purpose Finally having shot his sixth Pink i was about to go walk the Geese off the other end of the Field when a High single Pink came, cheeking all coat pockets i found a old rusty shell slipped into my 20ga just as friend say's Nope far to high ( he was using 12ga and 3" Mag ) BANG i folded probally the highest Goose i've ever shot Following lots and lots of choice word's i could not stop laughing as my friend nearly had a heart attack do to me shooting then by nearly being hit by the Goose said your the most jammy *** i've ever met this Pink has leg ring and Neck collar. we track down the Lady doing the study with a Big smile i hand her the Pink with total shock she said did we fancy a Coffee round her's !!!!!!!!!!!!! After making Coffee and phone call she produced a load of paper The FACT'S The Pink was seen Sunday feeding in Aberdeenshire and left with 1500 - 2000 so was probally the same Geese seen flying over Stoke on Trent by someone i had recently taken Goose shooting then shot by me Monday morning in Norfolk and now the really One in a Million thing the Lady doing the Goose study had ringed this Pink in Aberdeenshire and with the information she had was why she was looking on Sunday for this Banded/Ringed Pink. A remarkable thing and avents to happen but a true fact sorry for being so long winded but as you can see my spelling and wording is not upto Robert's standeds I won't bore you with the 9lb Pink i shot on the marsh i first met Robert and got my ugly mug in a couple of shooting mag's Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I cant get anywhere remotely near that one , the only strange one I shot with a ring on , was a Teal I shot years ago that had been ringed locally and when they sent me the information the person who done the ringing on the report was my brother in law who hated shooting.........Hard luck ...I don't I love it. 6.5x55SE Posted October 10, 2014 Author Report Share Posted October 10, 2014 Thanks John i must admit i have been very very lucky over the year's with some odd thing's i also shot a Neck Collard leg ringed Greenland Whitefront from the Norfolk marsh Robert and i shot that had been Wexford to Islay to Mull of Kintyre to Islay then to Norfolk and i shot it from a Bunch of Pinks. What was that doing in Norfolk !!!!!!! and all those places in a couple of months and i've only seen the odd Pink on Islay having shot 2 single Pinks in 11 visits to Islay Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Wildfowler325 Posted October 10, 2014 Report Share Posted October 10, 2014 Iv shot 2 that i can remember clearly (possibily a few more) pinks up here in Aberdeenshire beside the Loch of Strathbeg over my 35+ years fowling that have Rings and Neck collars. SuperGoose75 Posted October 11, 2014 Report Share Posted October 11, 2014 Good read Boyd,You really Couldnt make it up..Its akin to winning the lottery in a wildfowling sense. One thing i find interesting is the fact you shot your Highest ever pink with a 20bore. Not that i dont believe you' but the many times Ive heard folk knocking a 20 bore for long Shots at geese. I have no experience of using a 20bore so cant really comment to much' but by the description of your Shot it sounds more like supermag12' or 10bore range..? I already know of your ringed GWF that you shot' so you may be interested to know that We ringed 50 or so a few yrs back. Ive seen a fair few of them this past couple of years when they returned on my outings and they have all red neck collars. Although some do go Down to Wexford a good many stay with us all year round. So if the right weather hits Ireland there is a fair chance of them getting sent your way. We ringed some Wild Icelandic Greys a couple of yrs back also' i would be interested to hear if anyone has managed to bag one of these' possibly in Scotland..? Internet and Forums I feel is not the place to qoute actual ranges/yards as it can/could come across as I'm better than everyone else of which I'm certainly NOT. But I will say Anser2 has witnessed first hand the Nack I seem to have at consistently Cleanly killing Tall Geese. The Pink mentioned was shot in the Lead days using 20ga 3" Winchester 1-1/4oz Copper Plated Lead 2 shot and 1/2 choke. Whitefront's are my Favourite Goose and I chased them before the shooting Ban in Scotland on the Mainland and Islands in particular Islay and have been very successful in my pursuit of them Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Found a number of neck banded pinks , brent and greylag in the field in the feeding flocks , but never shot a ringed pink. anser2 Posted October 11, 2014 Report Share Posted October 11, 2014 (edited) Boyd , there was a big push in ringing pinks a decade ago , but its an expensive bussness and I do not think many are being ringed these days. Jenny was doing her study back in the late 1990s\early 2000s and I suspect the majority of those birds are dead now. There was another spate of ringing pinks around 2005 in East Scotland by Natural Englind I think , but they only caught a few hundred or so birds. The Wildfowl Trust were catching most of the birds in Jenny's study and they ringed a hell of a lot of birds. As i said previously' I never doubted what you Wrote and i was only Curious as to what range a 20bore would kill at. I always heard that a 20 bore had no place in goose shooting unless geese very close over decoys. But the more i think about it' surley a 20 would have similar range only throwing less shot at the target and possibly a shorter shot string' so less margin for error' In which case all i can say is good shooting on your part. As for the copper coated lead' I know all about their stopping power. I tumbled a very Tall grey this morning with 2 1/4 oz's of the stuff.I will do a write up of it later when I get a chance as i got some footage of the retrieve on my phone. thanks for answering my Query.
