michufc
Well last night I took my springer for a quick outing lamping from my truck. I went out a couple of weeks ago and I could not find my rabbit that I shot by the time I drove over to the area about 180 yards away and it really bugged me as I like to retreve everything I shoot. So I thought I would take my springer next time and that was last night. Well I sort of threw him in at the deep end really as I have been doing lots of dummy work and had not got to do any warm game yet so I thought I would give him the chance. Well the first rabbit was shot at around 100 ish yards away so I drove over and got him out and cast him off pointing towards the rabbit and he found it nudged it with his nose and then picked it up and altered it's position in his mouth so he could hold it nicely and straight back to me with a nice delivery. I was over the moon with him so I drove round some more and shot 4 more rabbits all collected by spot. One happy daddy so from now on I won't go lamping without him

michufc
I now feel like he is ready for his next stage now which is brill just got to condition him to shotguns as he is a very timid dog so I have not pushed it at all with him nice and slow with the starter pistol
loriusgarrulus
Its funny that Leo our springer hates the starter pistol and won,t fetch a dummy after one goes off. He doesn't mind the 410 or the 12g though.
michufc
Yes it's mad I was using my .17hmr and there not the quietest things and it never bothered him but he is not keen on the starter pistol so I think when I next get a chance I will take him out with my 20 bore and see if he makes the connection that when it goes off there is something good for him to retreve in the end
loriusgarrulus
Leo has made the connection. When he hears the bolt on the 410 go back he sits and looks where the gun is pointing.

Konnie
A bloke our way got a hmr and after shooting a few rabbits, and collecting them thought this ain't fun across fields no vehicle access, so he taught his dog to retrieve by running along the beam of the lamp he said keeps the area quite, I thought clever. michufc
I suppose that's a bit like when you go out with lurchers don't they train them to kind of follow the lamp in a way
