A Day Of Heavy Rain

After been confirmed to barracks during todays heavy rain, the sky finally went from Black to Grey just at the time I normally make my way down towards the marsh. I thought there would have been some water lay about but not the amount which greeted me when I came to the marsh which normally hold a duck or two , the first problem I had was there was cattle walking around the marsh where I intended to flight , so one trick that always seem to work is I walk towards them giving a little call at the same time and as soon as they start to follow me I walk them round to the next field and when there all on I cross the ligger back to the field I wanted to be on in the first place , and up to now they haven't worked out how to cross a nine inch plank. With the light rapidly fading it was time to sit on my beer crate that I leave down there and see if anything is on the move, I didn't have to wait long when a pair of Mallard swung round and the one that was nearest to me folded with the only shot I gave it as the one the other side was to far for a shot , my dog didn't need telling to fetch as he was half way there before the duck hit the deck bringing me back a drake in full condition .By now it was nearly dark and as I looked towards the light of the town I saw three duck coming on my left well within range and where the first shot went I don't know but the second shot sent one hitting the water I expected it to be a Widgeon but it turned out to be a hen Gadwall and with that it was time to head off home after a very good start on the flooded marsh.

I also ventured out in the wet weather. It chucked it down from the moment i left my house to the moment i got back. I decided to go check out a section of marsh that i have not shot before. I stuck close to the sea wall as dog was having the day off. Saw the most brent i have ever seen at one time, a huge skein lifted off the marsh not far from me, they where calling away as they circled around and chose a different bit of green to sit on.

That was about all i saw really, no legal quarry about except for a pigeon which, although i had taken the 10, was a little out of range.

When i got back to the landy, i had to pour the water out of the jacket pockets!

I have to confess cowardness in the face of the weather last night. As I drove down to the coast to meet a mate for the evening flight the heavens opened with some of the worst rain I have encountered. Before I was half way to the marsh the roads were badly flooded and worse the car started to play up with the engine missing a beat every now and then , when I reached the marsh the rain was worse and so was the engine. I dare not turn the engine off for fear it would not start when my mate turned up. His 4x4 was having the same problem with damp getting into the motor. With no sign of the rain abating and the roads flooding , we both decided the chance of being stranded miles away from home was not worth the risk and we abandoned the flight and headed back home.

Morning anser2 .....We had the heavy rain during the morning and from early afternoon it started to ease up , and when I was down the marsh it was nothing more than a drizzle in fact a ideal sky looking towards the town leaving a nice background to see any incoming duck . I don't blame you one bit for giving it a miss because if it was raining as hard as it was dinner time I would have stayed in and watched The Fenland Wildfowlers D V D for about the tenth time as I had already had got soaked when I took my dog out first thing in the morning .

Yesterday we had moderate rain from mid morning , but it stopped mid afternoon as the wind dropped. But around 5 pm the heavens opened and the rain continued into the early evening. What a contrast today , the evening flight was still and the sky clear with some big clouds. I flighted in the Broads , hardly any duck about where I went , saw 1 mallard and a bunch of wigeon , but put up two bunches of mallard as I walked off in the darkness. But plenty of greylag , only took a brace as it was a very long walk back to the car.

I haven't forgot you and I will give you p m in a few weeks time and you can decide when it would be a good time for you to come down for the day ................a t b ......John.

Hi Marshman,
I remember you mentioning how you go out most nights - good on you. That's real dedication.

I know what you mean about the livestock, the landowner where I shoot has just put a whole load more donkeys on the land temporarily and they have made it fairly hard to move around, or indeed move around quietly.

Nice write up you did though, and look forward to meeting you in the near future :) .
