New car options - one or two?

Hi all

Bit of a vague question, but I'm thinking about future car options. I had two cars (Jimny and an ancient Porsche) until Monday, when my fiancée rolled and wrote off my Jimny :sad1: Luckily she and the dog were fine, but the Jimny is no more. I'm tempted to get a second little 4x4 - maybe a Vitara as said fiancée no longer trusts Jimnies. Having said that, I don't have a huge amount of need for a second car (gf has a car of her own). I used the Jimny for a bit of shooting, firewood collection, muddy dogs etc. And some short journeys / dodgy areas where I didn't want to take the Porsche. I now can't drive to work, so that's most of the shorter journeys out of the window. I could just keep the Porsche. Or I could sell the Porsche and get one car to do all the jobs - but I'm not sure what car would. The Jimny was a utility vehicle, and the Porsche is a great fun car for longer / less muddy journeys. I vaguely thought of something like a Subaru Impreza (fast and fun on road, reasonable off road) but they're thirsty, expensive to insure and a bit chav. Or maybe a Skoda yeti - but I don't know if they're much fun to drive.

What slightly puts me off the Vitara is that they're higher tax band than my old Jimny (which was 2000 reg, so £140 a year or something). Also, I have realised that 2 cars is a fair bit of work and money to keep serviced, insured and taxed, and possibly I don't really need 2. (Can't use the gfs car much as she drives to work every day - and she doesn't want me filling it with logs, mud etc.).

One further thought is that the gfs car is also fairly aged - not quite on its last legs, but probably not that long left. So we could get one joint reasonable car like a disel BMW, then I could get a fun car just for me - be that the same Porsche, a Jimny or Vitara, or other. Oh, I also want a tractor, but don't have the land for one yet!

Any thoughts on a car that would fill all my needs?

Cheers.

Would your fiancée drive the Porsche to and from work. Then you could get another car for all the other requirements. Yeti with the underside protector as they haven,t got huge clearance. Kangoo has tons of room and the advantage of 3 full adult size seats in back and yet more loading space at the back of this.

Scooby Wagon?

Did consider that. Less chavvy than the Impreza, still quite fun to drive and practical. Still thirsty, but I'd guess not too bad to insure. I guess they have low ground clearance, though that's not the end of the world... Will investigate further.

Kangoo trekka?

Never heard of it! Let's have a look... Hmm, it's not pretty! But they do seem to be fairly cheap, roomy and surprisingly competent off road. Wonder what they're like to drive? Allegedly they suffer from electrical problems. Nice to have a diesel option, should help with fuel consumption.

Hmm. She's not a fan of the Porsche, and I'm not a fan of her using it! So probably not. But I do like the Yeti - other people and Top Gear seem to rate them too. As I said, ground clearance probably not a problem as I don't hard core off road. Does anyone know if the Yeti has selectable 4x4 or full time 4x4?

Do you want to be practical or have fun?

If you arent far from your logs, buy the tractor and a small trailer, zero tax and £50 a year insurance - value is actually rising quite fast - a fergie 3 cyl is a good investment. So, if you have a tractor you could go for a fun car, maybe a 911 also rising quickly in value but needs a careful choice.

Practically, I would buy a diesel newish car with a trailer. My Hyundai will collect logs and do a bit of off-road, also very good on road. Some good deals about at the moment. Keep the old porche.

My choice is and will be (moving) a new IX35, a good, very secondhand defender, and a John Deere compact tractor. I might just get a trailer for the IX35 and get a John Deere ATV (diesel) instead of the Land Rover. That gives me logs, shooting (ATV). The flexibility of a trailer, a good road car and a Tractor with the bits like posthole borers, hedgecutter etc (slowly though)

Sold the Porche yesterday, sad to see it go.

Ideally both! Therein lies the problem.

Logs currently are all over the place - I hope to move somewhere where they're closer to me. I would like a tractor - so many potential uses! (Or, alternatively, so many implements to waste money on that will be used once or twice then never again :s) Which Hyundai do you have? An older IX35?

Also torn between a full sized tractor or a compact. Full size are more for your money, better range of implements, more power. But need a reasonable amount of space, harder to work on, less manoeuvrable, thirstier. The compacts are smaller, neater, less thirsty, but not much cheaper, more limited in power and implement choice... Suppose it depends how much land you have.

Glad you managed to sell the 944 - did you get anywhere near your asking price? Yes, I'd be sorry to see mine go too - I find the best way to get over the sadness is to get another car...!

Hello ! Yes my Hyundai is a 60 plate - nearly 5 years old now but one minor problem in all that time, has to be a new one but a different colour !. My Fergie 35 (grey gold) cost £1500 14 years ago and is in almost as good condition as when I bought it - resale value somewhere between £3000 and £3500 so good news. Sold my John Deere 955 with 190 hours on it.

Yes the Porche went for £6K without the new owner seeing it ! Collected yesterday. He was telling me about a 944 with 120K on the clock on offer for £9k near Glasgow but I think my price more reasonable and a bit better than Munglers throw away offer, which was however appreciated.

Both the Fergie and the John Deere 955 were 35 horse power, one with grass tyres and one with normal - the combination was rather useful. Bying myself a gun to remember the Porche. possibly a 20 bore !!!

Trust all is well with you ?

Regards,

Kes

It's a hard choice one or two vehicles, I run a pickup day to day 32-35mpg goes lamping up to 3 times a week and other shoot days when needed. Dogs dead things and logs go in the back and it's pretty comfortable for long journeys. If practical is what you need it's hard to improve unless you run two vehicles

The skoda Yeti is very expensive for what it is. I looked as a second car small 4x4 runabout and got a shock.

Your best with a Subaru, Audi allroad or Volvo XC70 types if most your driving is Tarmac. Or go soft roader, XTrail Quashqi RAV4.

I was tempted by a Subaru and looking mat the mpg my little RAV4 does I might aswell have, more speed more space, bit less capable off road, that I rarely ever drive off road.More muddy tracks and to get to shoots in snow type of use for me.

Well done! I think 6k is a pretty fair price. There was an S2 for sale a few weeks ago that I was going to look at, but it was cat C and the owner's reserve was more than I thought the car was worth - I'd have given maybe 3k for it, and it eventually sold on the second attempt for a bit over 4k. I probably shouldn't look at tractors now, I couldn't get one up the steps to my garden, and it's tiny. Out of interest, how much land do you need to justify 2 tractors?! 35 horsepower seems a good level - power enough for most things, but reasonable fuel consumption and not too large...

Just thinking about a short term car to get me through winter - don't really want to use the Porsche too much on icy salty roads. Other than Jimny regret, all is pretty good thanks, yes! Yourself?

Audi all road?

Subaru forester diesel ?

Honda CR-V?

Isuzu Rodeo?

Thanks HDAV. I'll have a look at those, and also the Nissan X-trail someone else suggested. Mate got a petrol Forester for £500, abused it for a year or two then sold it for £500 as I remember.

I have wrestled with the on road / off road issue - 99% of my driving was on road and I went from there.

Ultimately my final choice was determined by 0-60 times and that it had to have 4 exhaust pipes. That's how we roll in Essex.

Drive it like it's stolen; Mungler out.

Thanks Mungler! What did you get in the end, then?!

Hummer

Hell no! Hideous things, not my taste at all. The other one you posted wasn't too bad though! Perhaps a bit big for UK roads...!

Agreed. Truth be told, I didn't use the 4wd on the Jimny more than a couple of times a month. But it was nice to have it there, just in case. Would have been useful this winter, especially if it snowed, but not now :sad1: You're getting about what I got out of the Jimny MPG wise - what've you got?

I'd go second-hand, not new. But perhaps the Yeti is still too recent to be a good buy even second-hand. Hadn't thought of a Volvo - my dad had them for years and they worked pretty well. Subaru and Audi do seem to be good options. Is the Rav4 fun to drive? Does it feel like a car rather than a 4x4?

Cheers.

Legacy outback is the original fast estate 20mpg on the petrols but a hoot on country roads possibly quicker than the Porsche (on twisty stuff)...... http://www.autotrader.co.uk/articles/2007/11/cars/subaru/outback/subaru-legacy-outback-3-0r-auto-car-review £4k buys a new shape decent spec 3.0l http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201410148205880/sort/default/postcode/sa148qg/onesearchad/used/make/subaru/usedcars/page/1/model/outback/radius/1500/engine-size-cars/3l_to_3-9l?logcode=p

Rav4 is car like to drive just watch out for 2wd imports all uk cars were 4x4 I think the 2.0litre petrol is gutsy but thirsty

Thanks, that does look good. Not super cheap on Autotrader even for high milers, but not horrendous either. Then I found one on Ebay for £700! A bit thirsty, but not too bad - I see there's also a diesel version. Has anyone driven the diesel version? Or can anyone compare the Outback and the Legacy?

Cheers.

Who needs land to justify a tractor !

I have a two acre garden with lots of grass to cut and a field adjacent, of about the same size with a small wood (150yds by 50 yds). The trees are enough to produce some wood which I use the Fergie for and the garden needed grass tyres. We have renovated the house and the John Deere had a front loader which was useful for moving materials.

If I were looking for a car just for winter, I'd probably go for a cheap but sound LWB shogun/pajero. A very solid car and truck with loads of load space and a pretty useful off road performance. If you buy well, someone from here will buy it for a shooting truck and you wont lose much for the safest winter motoring - Fuel, if its a diesel is around the 28 mpg mark if I remember correctly.

All with me is pretty good, thanks, house sold, dispossessed of all my toys but looking forward to a new house and different toys, less gardening and more 'farming', lots of shooting (hopefully) and a bit of fishing on the coast.

Take care.

Living the dream Kes! That sounds pretty much what I'd like to buy - maybe more woodland and fewer fields! Could you not have got one tractor with two sets of wheels, one on turf tyres one on agri?! I suppose it's a hassle to switch between them. Will consider a Pajero too, cheers. Glad all is well. :good:
