Charlie_79
Hello, everyone, at the end of the month I am going to start teaching my dog to retrieve so i thought I would be organised and get all the needed dummies now, one thing I need advice on is what weight and type of dummy should I buy for a 6 month old cocker ? Any advice would be great Many thanks Charlie
michufc
A tennis ball is a great tool and a half pound canvas dummy and then a 1 pound canvas dummy. Oh and a rib bit skin would be all you really need for quite a while buddy
kent
use anything it don't have access to to use as a toy. Bits of junk is just fine as long as its safe, stuffed old socks, pipe lagging, roll of waste carpet, whatever. You don't even have to spend anything OR go down the pound shop or similar and get a big bag of balls.
Yellow Bear
one well known trainer uses "lambs wool" paint rollers we used mini to start with and then full size. Edited October 19, 2014 by Yellow Bear
rimfire4969
I would start with a tennis ball, dogs love them and they roll which will leave a sent trail for the dog to move along. Moving to puppy dummies. Remember slow and steady and always end on a positive.
pboro shot
I use tennis balls early on to see a puppys interest then i go straight to rollers, i like paint rollers the lambs wool type, then tend to use dummies for distance more then anything dont allow the dog to fail to start nice open ground no rough to start with then progress .I bring the tennis ball back out if im running two dogs later on for speed training ,never a dummy Everyone does it different but if it works stick to it.. Charlie_79
Thank you everyone for the replies, looks like paint rollers and tennis balls could save me some money , should I think about scenting the paint rollers with anything ? Or should I just leave them standard ? Many thanks
pboro shot
Dont worry to much about scent ...seen retrieves will be order of the day for now, as you use them there scent and yours will be on them I dont introduce scent untill I introduce fur/feather ..
