Four pigeons in a wind.

Pigeons have deserted the Cotswolds, at least round here. No prizes for guessing where they have gone to. The few that remain are in the beech woods and with an hour to spare I headed to a large beech wood this afternoon as much on a dog training session as a shooting expedition. The wind was stupendous and the few pigeons I saw were dancing around on it like fireflies.

The wood was too large to cover realistically, even the leeward side, so I stood on a corner underneath a high seat to watch the ebb and flow of the pigeon traffic. None came towards me into the wind but a few drifted wide downwind from who knows where. The first one to come anywhere near was 40m up going like stink and I folded it dead. The second one was slightly closer along the same line and that paid the price too. Emboldened by my surprize success I gave the next one, 45m up and travelling at a similar speed to the others, a lot of lead and I shot that too. Three misses followed and then the best of all, a very high pigeon which I almost considered to be out of range. It fell to my single shot.

Two of the four represented the best two pigeons I have ever shot. The other two were in my top ten. All were full of beech mast.

Jasper sat rock steady during the shooting. He had marked all of them, none within 80m of where we stood and he retrieved then in minutes.

Jasper is awesome, he looks surprised that he's had his photo taken!

He is a very fine dog for 14 months. If anything goes wrong with his training and his shooting life it will be my fault.

As for surprise at having his picture taken it took a while before he put his 'lipstick' away. That would not have made a pretty picture.

Well done,JDog, that's a bit of real shooting with the wind up them!!!! jasper is a credit two you both. It's very good of you to shoot in the week as it allows the birds to fill the void we make at the weekend, will you be out again ???? ???

I am always pleased to be of some help to you. I know how much you struggle for pigeons.

As for going out again, I am going to Wales tomorrow to try to shoot some. A report will follow, good or bad. My guide knows much more than I do about this decoying lark so it should be good. I spoke to him today and he said that he had seen one so I will be going to try to find it.

"Two of the four represented the best two pigeons I have ever shot. The other two were in my top ten. "

That's quite a statement coming from a seasoned pigeon shooter for God knows how many years. If you say the four shots were all in your top ten then I reckon they must have been just amazing.

Congratulations to you and Jasper on what was obviously a memorable hour or so out........

A lovely photo Mr JDog , and Jasper look in top condition and that is down to you ,and by the sound of it you aint during a bad job with his training neither ,

You were saying you shot four of the best pigeons you have ever shot.................They must have been good ones............... I find a good day is what you can remember you have shot, and not a huge amount that just become targets.
